I used four A123 -7 -volt batteries for mine. Connected two in series and the group then in parallel to give me approximately 14 volts and enough amperage to do the job. Charging the A123's is quick enough. No concern about over-drawing the A123's is a plus.
I was lucky to find some left over Black and Decker electric screwdriver kits after B&D closed down line of small tools. Rich

AviationNut that what I'm looking for. One question when you charge it up do you charge useing the balanceing plug and do you leave it conected to the starter.

I charge it through the deans plug since I don't have a balancing charger - but use the Astroflight Blinky to balance during/after charge. I velcro'd the battery to the plate so I can easily remove it for charging - best not to risk the starter to fire just in case [X(] Also, I leave it connected to the starter when not in use since there is no power drain when idle.

Hi!
This is how I have solved the starter/battery problem.
14,8V,2200mAh Lipo! With automatic glow driver attached to the glassfiber case.
If you want one ...I can make one (glass-fiber case) for you!

luker,
This topic has come up before, but this is how I did mine (see pictures). The battery is from Harbor Freight (paid $10 I think) and I made the "holder" out of wood and covered with black adhesive covering.

mine fits perfectly between the legs of the starter, just zip tied on..
I charge this lipo on average, 4 or 5 times a YEAR.
As long as your engines start easily, the quick "touch" it needs to start up a glow engine uses up all but none of the lipo.
I just added a deans connector to the starter and disconnect at the end of the day.
Notice that my starter has a the button off to one side.. so it fits perfectly in the hand with the lip between the finger than thumb

You didn't mention what size starter you are using, but Tower Hobbies has a great solution for $29.99

I use one of these every weekend and would NOT go without one now!

It's not a lipo approach, but it works great. I got two cheap (Tower) 6 cell RC car packs, 1500 mAh, I think you can get them for about 10 each. Got a series Tamiya style connector, so the 7.2v of each battery was connected in a way to produce 14.4v. The put single Tamiya style connector on my starter cord. Batteries went into appropriately sized Radio Shack project box, which was screwed to the "feet" of my starter.
Produces tons of zip and avoids the whole lipo charging risk.

If you want plug and go... see this...

Add two racking packs and you're done.

What's the benefit of a LiPo over a 12V Pb ?

Hi!
Much more power than using 12V lead battery (I have a 14,8V, 2200mAh LiPo bought from Hi-models in China) and important...Much lighter!
