Hi!
In pylonracing we have used something called "Dzus" fastener . It's used to secure engine cowls.

I use something similar to the red one...

they all basically have the same theme.. sliding rod held extened by a spring.

It's been my experience that Dzus fasteners are used an full size aircraft and race cars. The ones I have used would be too large and require too much force to engage and disengage on a balsa model airplane in the .40-.60 size range. Maybe you could use them an very large model planes if mounted into plywood, I'am not sure. I have a box full of them left over from my race car building days but never thought about using them on my model planes. jaka, are you talking about the same size Dzus fasteners as I am? What size model planes have you used them on and how have you mounted the spring. We pop riveted them into a steel ,aluminum or fiberglass panels on a race car.

Hi!
I have small Dzus fasteners with a head diameter of 7,8mm. These are used for securing engine cowls (glass fiber cowls) on Formula 1 or Sport .40 planes ...or what ever small plane you like. A 1,2mm piano wire is used for the DZUS to grab to

The red one as mentioned above looks good as well as the magnetic ones used in the newer ARFs.  They need a tab or hinge on the front and latch or magnet on the back in case they come loose IMHO.

jaka, Thanks for the reply on the Dzus size question. Yes, the ones I have are almost twice the size of yours. Mine have an almost 16mm head and use 2mm springs. I dug out my box of left over racing Dzus fasteners to measure them and found some smaller 7mm head different style fasteners we called "jet locks" that I may be able to use on some larger models. I had forgotten just what all I had in that box till I dug it out to measure. Thanks and smooth landings to you.

I still have some CAMLOC fasteners I bought from Prather Products about a 100 yrs ago when they were still in business. They're something like Dzus fasteners, just a different brand. Give it a google for a source. They make some small ones, like a 1/4 in. shank which are the ones I have..

I like the Camloc fasteners, as well. Use them on my 1/4 scale L-5. Here is a link that shows several sizes:

The ones I use are V26S01-*AGV. Hope this helps you.
