Default Threading wire rod

I'm trying to locate wire that can be threaded for 8/32 hardware. Music wire is much too hard. I cannot use fully threaded rod for my required application.

I'm hoping someone can direct to me a source of such wire.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You might try a welding supply store. They will have many different sizes and alloys. Perhaps they will have a size that works for you.

Thanks. Good idea. I don't know why I didn't think of that since I've been using 1/8 welding rod and cutting 6/32 threads in it. That rod is available in most hardware stores, but I didn't see thicker rods.

buy 8-32 threaded rod at the hardware store in 12" lengths. LHS stocks 6-32 and 8-32 as well.

To thread music wire, heat it red hot with a torch, let it cool. Takes a lot of the hardness out of it. Use a lot of cutting fluid, brake fluid, kerosene, water can be used for cutting fluid.

Buzz.

+1. Annealing the piano wire will soften it enough to thread it.

I am kicking myself... Many years ago, their was a company called "Rodchuck", where by they offered dies that would accommodate different size welding wire sizes for threading purposes. Unfortunately, it appears they are no longer in business, as I searched for their product on the net. I kept saying to myself at the times I had viewed their ads to purchase a set and of course never did. There's probably a warehouse full of leftover product just sitting somewhere, not doing either the owner or modelers any good.
And no more that I am aware of.

I will add that the rodchuck system (which is no longer available) was simply a progressive die system . For example when threading a 3/32 rod for 2-56 you would first use a 3-56 die then a 2-56 die . An 1/8 rod for 4-40 threads you would start with a 5-40 die the use the 4-40 die . Off size dies such as 3-56 & 5-40 can be ordered from many tap and die manufacturers . I would still anneal the end of the rod before threading to prolong the life of the die

For 8-32 you will need 5/32" wire. 10-32 is 3/16". I think you will have trouble finding welding rod that size but you could look it up. You might try looking up a fence wire, but annealing piano wire is what I do.

Default 8-32 threads

Why not use fully threaded rod and cover it with tubing to keep up strength. Maybe able to find steel tubing, auto brake lines, or something like that. Brass would also help stop flexing.
