i was just wondering if anyone knows how to make flames with covering i thought it would look kind of cool on my 4*40 i just about ready to cover it now.

Fiest of all take a piece of paper and start doodling on it and make some flames of your own. When you have finally got what you need then cut out then trace on too the covering just reverse the template for the other side or wing then draw another smaller like flame that will fit inside you first flame and do it in yellow. Up close doesn't look rite but the farther away you get the better it looks. Done this on my HP200 and it looks great. The flames ar floresent red with cub yellow in the center of the flames. They are about 5 years old and have faded but still look good.[&:]

I browsed through this web site and found the flames I liked, Then I copied and pasted them on a banner program I have. Stretched and skewed them till they fit where I wanted them.

Printed out templates and cut them out. Lay the templates on your monokote and start cutting and iron them in place.

I put flames all over my Edge 540. It takes awhile and really eats up monokote.

I was ready an article on this written by Faye Stilley. His flames were copied from (enlarged) plastic model designs. The model used had no open bays. On the leading edge he used scallops to start and (3) different colors for the flames. All the flames had perfect butt fits. He accomplished this by laying the different monocote colors over each other when cutting - voila! Sure looked good. I've never tried it but it sounded good.

I read Faye Stilley's article before covering the bottom of my Super Sportster 40 with flames. I covered the open bays aft of the main spars with white monokote first. I cut the seams between the maroon and red flames at the same time and taped them together. I ironed on both colour flames at the same time with the tape still holding them together... perfect butt fit. The tape will come off cleanly after it cools.

Why not air brush 'em with the monokote paint (can't recall the name)? use frisket paper for the stencil, and work back from the flame edges with blue, to purple, to red, to orange, to yellow, fading to the white monokote. You don't need to use all the colors, but go in order with those you do, and it'll look great. Outline with a pinstripe, and clear coat. It'll also be a lot lighter than all those layers of covering.

I also have been considering trimming a plane with flames and have seen quite a few planes here on RCU with them.

Although I highly appreciate the covering job on Juice's plane (it looks awesome), my personal preference is fewer flame tails - like only 2-4 large tails per wing panel.

There's some REALLY nice flame jobs in the Fun Flying Planes and Profile Planes forum right here on RCU. Look for Termagator (Gator) and flames. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks Jeff, I had invisioned those flames to come out a little different, but heck I get in a hurry,
heres a pic of some flames on my dads PBXL and a pic of a delta combat plane called "wildthang"

these were just free handed onto monokote with a flair pen and then cut out, stuck on with windex and heat....G

Juice, if you put that much work into the bottom of the plane, I'd LOVE to see the top! Nice work!
