That's called an avitar. Click on settings at top right of page, scroll down to the area concerning selecting avitar.

You have to get the image down to 85X85 to post it, not always easy. []

There is a free thumbnail reducer program available I think is called Easy Thumbnails that works great. I don't have the link here at home but I'll post it when I return to work on Monday.
