Default xacto blade and soldering iron

I have read on a couple threads that you can more easily trim iron on covering from a covered model with a soldering iron that has a #11 blade attached to it.
I have never seen one attached like this.
Does anyone have any pictures or recommendations?
Thanks!

I bought one at Lowe's Home Improvement. I think it's a Weller. The replaceable tips included an Xacto knife chuck, and it had one blade with it.

I don't use the blade for trimming. I use the pencil tip for removing covering at places like the stab mounting. Just draw the line in ink where you want to remove the covering, put your wooden or aluminum straightedge about 2mm from the line, and drag the pencil tip across the covering. It will melt away along that line. You can then pull off the covering between the lines.

I used the blade for working a split landing gear block loose from the ribs. It will heat up the epoxy and loosen it. Careful how hard you pry with it.

If you're looking for a slick way to remove overpull covering from the edges... this ain't it.

Good luck,
Dave Olson

Your local hobby shop might even stock this item since it is a Exacto item . I even switch the blade that it comes with it for the Exacto stainless steel # 11 since I use mine to cut fiberglass.

Most hobby hot knives come with an exacto blade attached to it. As mentioned, you can also drag a fine soldering tip (1/8" or 1/16" ) across the covering to melt it.

I took a 1/4" soldering tip and cut a slot down the middle with an exacto saw. The #11 blade fits in the slot. To secure the blade I drilled and tapped a 2-56 hole to take a setscrew to clamp it tight.
