I live in Canada and i just want to know where i could buy that rit dye you are talking about. Do you buy it in your hobbies store, can i order it like from tower hobbies ot what ?

looks like I am going to have to step up to the plate with my vast accumulation of knowledge on this subject. I am experienced, been doing it for days
I would guess any clothing dye would work.

WOW!
Four gallons of water, one cup salt, two packages of black Rit dye powder, 145 degrees for 40 minutes.... I'm thrilled. It worked better than I imagined! I dipped at 10 minute intervals until it was as dark as I wanted.
Thanks to everyone for the great advise! Here's a picture of the final result:

Guys I just finished this process and I can say that it works great! This is my second attempt as the first time the water was not hot enough. Thanks to this board for the suggestions! Pics are here:
