Cowl primer before Sig dope
I am new to the use of Koverall, and dope. I am ready to spray my cowl on a Great Planes Cub, and want to spray it with a sandable primer before dope. Can I use a automotive primer, and what type do I use laqure, or enamal? Is this a good way to prime, can anyone offer advice?
Thank You

RE: Cowl primer before Sig dope
If you are planning to use dope for finishing, I suggest that you use a lacquer type primer. Dope is lacquer based and does not bond well over enamel. Enamel will often work well over dope or lacquer, but dope over enamel is likely to be a no-no.
Make a test peice before using to check out compatibility.

Ummmm, I would agree with using Automotive lacquer primer prior to using dope on the plastic, but (big ol' but) I would reccomend that you use a different finish on the plastic cowl. Perhaps something like Enamel, or Polyurethane, with a clearcoat. Dope is a little difficult to make appear as a metal finish. It can be done, but there are easier ways to accomplish it.

RE: Cowl primer before Sig dope
In response to Herb Brown, dope is not lacquer based. Dope is made from MEK and cellulose. It's about 75 per cent MEK poured into ground up cellulose with a pigment added. They are both solvent based and this is sometimes where the confusion comes in. Since the solvent is MEK , be sure the primer you use doesn't react to MEK. Why use dope when enamel will work?
