Just opened a roll of bright yellow ultracoat for the purpose of covering my hog bipe. My question is: Isn't this stuff supposed to be opaque? I can see every piece of balsa and every grain within right through this stuff. Is this always the case with "bright yellow" ultracoat, or did I get a very special annoying roll?

Don't know, but I have 2 special rolls, also. I'm thinking (uh-oh)
it's just the indoor light.

Can't be the indoor light... I can see through this stuff in the dark! Certainly nothing like the opacity of all the white rolls of ultracoat I've used. What really pisses me off is you can't tell until a piece is cut out and the white backing is peeled off. I really hate to use Monokote anymore, but I don't see a choice. I just wish I knew before I blew the 14 bucks on a roll that's not fit for the underside of a wing

You may have a bad roll , some times the quality control is out to lunch! New stuff has a clear backing. Get a hold of Horizon Hobbies . >>>>>>>>>big max 1935

I hope youre right, I cringe at the idea of using monokote, but I've used their yellow on my first covering job and the scraps I've still got are perfect. I really wanted to get this plane done this week so now its use mono or wait/hope that what I got was really just a bad lot.

I bought a roll of the cub yellow to fix some places on my Tiger 2. The ultracote was fine and looked just like the monocoat that I have used before. Make sure you did not buy a special transparent color with a yellow tint.

The bright yellow is a little "transparent" and you can see wood grain
through it, particularly if the grain is fairly dark. You may want to move
over to Cub Yellow (HANU884)if you are experiencing problems with this.
Bright yellow is the only color that this is an issue due to the nature of
its color. You would find that other brands of covering that this is true
as well for a color such as this.

I can't believe there's a known issue and they don't do anything about it. I might want to buy ANOTHER roll.... GREAT!!! I can spend more money because they knew their product was lacking and didn't have the decency to add a note. If it's transparent, call it transparent. It's a nice touch adding that this is true of other brands. Unfortunately for them its not true of the scraps of monokote I've got right here.

Quit griping! I'd KILL to be where you are in your project! My Hog came in belly first last summer, so I started a MAJOR rework of it... As it stands, I'm just now getting the wings going, still have to re-assemble some fuselage stuff, and can't wait till I'm poring over Ultracote (checkerboard and opaque, btw) getting it ready to fly... It's all a matter of perspective, my friend!
