I am flying a Balsa USA Eindecker with a Zenoah G23 that is spewing black residue all over my Antique Solartex. I was wondering what type of clear coating do you guys use on Solartex? I would like to use water based if I can and how do you apply: brushed or sprayed? Thanks

I used Behr water based polyeurathane on my Sterling PT-17, brushed, and it worked fine. I first tested the paint with 15% nitro to be sure. You don't have that problem.

When I made the new doors and drawer faces for our kitchen, I sprayed, and found that I had to use an extremely high pressure to get reasonable results (if I recall right, it was about 60#).

I had good luck with Nelson Hobbies water-based clear. Gloss or matte is available. If you use the cross-linker, it is fuel proof. It went on very easily (as advertised) with cheapo foam brushes. It does everything as advertised, in my opinion.

Thanks guys! I am testing right now Minwax water based satin polyurethane. I brushed it on with a foam brush. So far it looks great and didn't change the looks of the original finish.

I have always used Hobby Poxy's clear epoxy but it is no longer available. However, Glasscote (spelling?), a Canadian company now sells the identical product under it's own name. I have also used the Miniway polyuethane but it leave a much softer coating while the epoxy is quite firm or hard.
