Default Nose Art Help

Ok this is what I need to do. I found this picture of a P-47 "ARKANSAS TRAVELER" and want to do my YA p-47 in this scheme. My problem is that the when I scanned the pic even though it was at the highest res I could it is to pixeled. If anyone of you know where I can find this nose art or how to clean up this pic I am ready to hear from you. Hope someone can help.

I just got my order from Cal-Grafx. Way to expensive and it wasn't the quality I expected.

How big is the image that you are scanning?

I would play with Adobe Photoshop. I am in the same boat you are. A full blown Photoshop is very expensive. I have a "starter" version that came with my HP computer. I have only played with it a little but it's very promising in that you can enhance an image. I plan on buying some decal sheets from Sig and playing around with some images for my Oriental ARF.

The nose art is 6.5", or the entire plane pic? If you're trying to take the art off the plane pic you're going to have probs and need to doctor it in CS2 (PhotoShop).
I blew your pic to 6.6x6.5 and it is pixeled.

I can clean it up and then reduce it but I can't tell what some of the detail are. What is the black mass sticking out of the back?

The purple circle background is going to need to be 4" The size of the the entire original scan is only 6 1/2" Not sure what the black blob is either but thought it was more hair. I have been trying to figure it out also for a while now. I played with Photoshop and tried to clean it up and came up with this. Didn't spend that much time on it but it is a start I guess. Anyone that is better at Photoshop go for it I have never taken that much time with it to get that good with it.

It will be a lot of work to clean up the picture so that it isn't pixelated. I increased the pixel/inch count to 1200 and it still didn't look good. See if you can get a new scan at 1200 pixels/inch since you will have to increase the image size (not the canvas size) to something like 4.75" square assuming you use the same boundaries that you have currently.

I thought of something I saw on TV a while back. It was a show about "The Jug" - great airplane. They said "If you want to send a picture home to your girl for her to display on the piano, stand next to a P-51, if you want to get home to see your girl again fly a P-47". The Brits named it the "Jug" because it supposedly looked like a milk jug. I don't get it. I know the Brits wern't too fond of our G.I.s. "They are overpaid, over sexed - and over HERE!."

Photoshop Elements is a reduced function version that sells for around $100. It is seriously limited by the couple of functions that are left out. The line drawing tool for example.

Paint Shop Pro (now sold by Corel) on the other hand is a full featured paint program that does everything and still sells for around $100. It's usually on sale for less. I've never paid over $40. It's advertised as a photo enhancing program, but all of them are. Some also do painting as well. And Paint Shop Pro does that superbly. And has an excellent line drawing tool as well as every other necessary paint function. All leading software packages will have the same functions available in that market, or they wouldn't be there. (Unless they traded on a name like Elements does, and not advertise what's missing. They bait you with the Photoshop name and then sell short.) In fact, PSP usually does most functions with less clicking and changing of options than Photoshop.

Hey, I don't want you to change horses mid stream but check this out. It's the logo of the 56th Fighter Group of the 8th Air Force in WWII. Lt. Col. Francis "Gabby" Gabreski was a member and one heck of a pilot. Just for your consideration.

There is a lot of nose art on this post. I am not sure if what you are looking for is there but it makes for good searching. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...light=nose+art

I think that 'Jug' is short for Juggernaut which is a relentless destroying force. Apt name and a compliment surely? As regards " over paid " etc I think the film "Yanks" by John Schlesinger probably explains the true attitudes when masses of young men from another continent and culture suddenly appear in a small English town.

Thanks KD, I'll have to check it out. My grandfather captured a German machine gun nest during WWI. He was one of the few G.I.s that shared his rations with the boys. They wrote back and forth until that anal pore Hitler came to power.

Just a quick question. Has anyone here USED the decal sheets that go through your puters printer?? Just wondering if the ink will take a clear coat without smearing or running. I know it isn't fuel proof and I have a pretty large graphic I want to put on a plane.

Gray,

You can print on clear or white "water slide" decal paper. It has to be cleared for protection, unless you are flying electric.

Vinyl is printable, obviously, but costly.

Gray Beard,
I do it all the time. Just give the fresh printed decal sheet a day to dry. I then give it about 3 light coats of clear and give that a day or two to dry.

I've had decals smear if I clear them right out of the printer.

I bought Testors decal maker and software. They include with the kit a clear spray that seals the decal and ink but you will need to fuel proof coat the decal once on the plane. I don't know if you can substitute Testors clear coat for a fuel proof clear coat. I think its very likly that you can. I don't recommend the decal software though because it's really geared fo 1/25 scale models. You should be able to make a good image by just copying from your hard drive to your printer. Sig Manufacturing sells some very large sheets of decal paper and it's very nicely priced.

Good luck,
Bill

Gimp is a free program that you can download. It is just as good as Photo Shop and just as complicated to learn to use well. If you are into photos and art, it is a worthwhile program though. It will work on Microsoft and on Linux platforms. The program comes already installed if you install Ubuntu Linux which is also a free program which is an operating system just as Windows is. You can install Ubuntu linux on a Windows system and have a dual boot system if you want. Just Google "Ubuntu" and/or "Gimp" if you are interested in more info.
