Default Dope Retarder

Anyone know of a hardware store equivalent for dope retarder.
Can't get to the LHS 'til the middle of next week but I am quite close to a Home Depot. I tried toluene in a small specimen of
butyrate...... Instant Cub Yellow cottage cheese. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

TIA

Mike

Here it is the middle of next week & I hope you went to the hobby shop by now to buy your retarder. Some auto paint supply stores may have it but it is probably out of style now & you would most likely would have had to buy a whole gallon of it. You only need it in the last coat to keep dope blushing away. Good luck & take a sniff for me ,I love it! MAX H.

You can buy either nitrate or butyrate dope retarder from Aircraft Spruce and Specialty on line. Here's the link:

I just bought some today from their retail store in Griffin, GA. Greate service and the price was reasonable.

I don't think you will find a suitable equivalent as the chemical composition of dopes is somewhat different from other lacquers and lacquer-type paints. You might try an automotive paint supply store to see if they have lacquer retarder. With a bit of luck you might get them to let you try a little in some dope you just happen to have with you in a small bottle!
