Best way to install Robart hinge points
 

Can anyone tell me the best way to install Robart hinge ponts, I have a drill gig for the hinge points. I need to know step by step procedure, I'll be using epoxy glue is this good? Anything you can tell me I will be thankful to hear. I'll be putting these on a Magic extra 300 by Model Tech. and a U Can Do 3D by Great planes.

Here is what I use as a drill guide for The Robart hinge points.

I made one of these for a friend who on shi first try drilled ll hinge holes in 14 min. and they were all dead center.

Yo 3D! I use 30 minute epoxy with no problem. CA sets too fast (even the thick stuff)
I can never get the hinge completely seated before the CA sets. Important! Put some vasiline on the hinge itself (only)with a q-tip before gluing the hinge in place. This will keep the glue out and lubricate at the same time! Flyboy1950

Pacer Technology makes 'Hinge Glue'. It's designed for use with Hinge Points. Some guy/gals swear by it, some swear by epoxy. I've used it in giant scale and so far it's held up. Just thought I'd mention an alternative to epoxy.

After drilling the holes, I also take a small v-shaped dremel bit and go into each hole about 1/8 inch. This will widen the areas for the hinge part of the hinge (where it is wider). Bob

I used to use epoxy until I used the Pacer Hinge glue like rcpilot did. It works great and you wipe up your mes with a wet towel. It comes with a thin applicator tip that allows you to squeeze the glue down in the hole. The glue is set in about 15 min. I even used it to glue my Sig Mini field box. No more epoxy for me.

I use Gorilla Glue from valu or home depot, it is by far the best I have seen for hinges.
I drill my holes, then I take a piece of sand paper and wrap it around a 1/8 dowl and sand across the surface so the hinge pin is recessed in the trailing edge or leading edge,set my hinges in check the gap and take it apart. Then all you do is take a q tip with a bit of water on it and stick it in the hole to wet it and then put a dab of glue in there and on the hinge and then stick it in and you are done, the glue cleans up with alchahol If needed. No mess no cleanup and in a couple hours you will not be able to get it apart. This works great in both built up and foam core wings.
The glue expands as it dries and gets veary tight around the barbs on the hinge.
This glue is also great for sheeting foam wings and installing flat type hinges, I also use it when I pin firewalls.

I also swear by the Vasaline method.

Put just a dab of Vasaline on the pivot, then heat it. The vasaline will melt into the pivot and prevent epoxy (or whateve glue you're using) from getting into it.

Works like a charm!

There are several glues to use including polyurethane (Gorilla, Probond), epoxy and Pacer's (and other brands) "hinge glue". Of the three, the easiest to use by far is the Pacer product. It goes where you put it, actually sticks to the nylon of the hinge and dries overnight. It has never failed for me even on 1/3 scale models. Be aware that "dry" rather than "cure" is the operative word for this product. If you use it inside a foam wing it can take literally days to dry. Some people say weeks. In wood, overnight is fine. Both epoxy and polyurethane make a mechanical bond inside the surface holding the hinge in place by physically filling in the hinge indentations. If you cut away a surface, you can peel off the epoxy from the hinge with your fingernail. The same for polyurethane. That means you have to use enough to fill the hinge well without getting any in the hinge pivot. This can be a real problem with polyurethane which foams up as it cures and can get into the hinge pivot if overused. The vaseline method to protect the hinge pivot works with all the glues.
