Ultimate Flight Box

These look a lot like my own Flight Box, I've got the fuel and battery in the lower compartment and rather than wedging them in with foam, I wrapped them in clingfilm and secured them with builders expanding foam, nice'n'snug.

Graeme, Hmmmmmmmm......that sounds like a good idea, I have foam rubber packed in all around my fuel tank and battery and I was worried about it getting all fuel soaked. Is the Saran enough to allow the tank and battery to be released?

Fixing bits in

It takes a bit of a tug to get them out, but what the heck, I'm not going to be moving stuff in or out, I'll not be taking the battery out until it quits as i can charge it in situ, and when i need more fuel, I'll just pump it in from the new container. To tidy things up, I've also "Foamed" in a couple of plastic trays to fill in the lower compartment.

Fieldbox & Fieldstand combo

Great thread guys! I'm using the same box as some of you with a unique twist... it doubles as a field stand.

Using the $29 Walmart "double-box" I did some mods to allow me to add or remove 2 adjustable field stand risers on the box for plane setup as well as refuel & restart without breaking down the box. What a great combo, I love it! For pics showing the whole rig go to:

DUDE! That beats me. I thought about a stand and never got the far. Not to mention you fly an Apple plane and drive a Ford. I like your taste!

Billy,

Yeah, it was a tough call... do I design a Apple/Mac scheme or a Ford 4x4 scheme? Hmmmm... well I guess the Mac won out! Now I just need a big Apple logo for my fieldbox!

I want to do a Dr. Pepper scheme, a Patron theme (Jose Quervo) and a Shiner Bock theme.

THE FIELD BOX FROM HELL! aka The Ultimate Field box!

About 20 years ago I got a Flambeau 22060 tackle box. It has about a zillion small compartments. I use this at home to keep all my small parts in. To go to the field, I have a smaller two-layer compartmented box that I got at Home Depot. It probably only has 20 compartments. Lid locks down to keep the whole thing together.

For a field box, I got an assembled tote from HobbyPeople and it has a removeable unit that keeps the starter, power panel and battery. You detach it from the main box and the whole thing weighs probably 20 lbs with fuel, battery, tools, etc.

I have a AstroVan, so I fold down the seats and put the fuse(s) there, put the wings in the seat belts along the sides, and the rest fits easily into the rear with a table, two chairs, misc coolers, and wife's stuff.

Takes about 5 trips to the tables to bring it all out though :(

That's one of the nice things about our club field, we can back right up to the grass pit area, pop the tailgate and set everything right there... no "trips to the tables" so to speak. All I have to do is pull my box from behind my seat, walk about 8 feet to the back of the truck and set it down... ready to rock.

Also, I can then split the box down into it's top/btm halves and leave the top half (with all my tools, spare parts, etc.) right there on the tailgate, then walk about 8 more feet into the grass pits where we set our planes and set the bottom half of the box in the grass (with my starter, glow, fuel, pump, etc. in it).

Makes it nice since everything I need to start the plane sets out there in one box right next to my planes in the pits and all my tools 'n stuff are there on my tailgate at tabletop level 8 feet away.

Of course, I keep it all together and mount my fieldstand risers on the box first, to assemble the planes. But that's another cool thing, while I'm assembling the plane "above my box" I can reach right down and open it up for wing bolts, ball drivers, etc. without taking the plane off and breaking the box down.

I fly once a day in the morning and I just carry the bottom part in the car. I figure if I nee tools then I'll fix it at home and go on to work.

At Least Two Brands

I checked out some "Field Boxes" this morning at Wally-World and Home Despot. The box at Wally's is made by ZAG, while the box at Home Despot is made by Black & Decker. The Black & Decker box has three wheels and rolls well on a concrete floor. Also, the two main wheels on the Black & Decker are larger than the two wheels on the ZAG and roll better.

That Black and Decker box should be the same as mine.

Billy,

I checked your posted pictures again and the Black & Decker box I looked at this morning is the same as yours. The box I saw has yellow latches while the latches on yours appear to be red. That is the only difference.

I am going to buy a Black & Decker box tomorrow.

Thanks for starting this thread. I found the information and pictures that you and everybody else posted to be very helpful.

I wish I could fly before work every day!! But as I go to work on my m/cycle thats a bit difficult for me. I usually fly 2 to 3 times a week (in a good week) if the weather lets me. Jolly old England is jolly wet and windy England at the moment. Sucks large!

The fuel pump in my flight panel gave up recently, so I bought a new one and screwed it onto the side of the box. It's slightly vulnerable but works well. I've got to drag the box 250 yards to the flight line from the road so these wheels are a godsend.

If I could give one word of advice it would be not to cut the lower tray to accomodate the standard size fuel jug. I can carry around the lower half using the handle but it is a little flimsy. I should have just used a 1 gallon fuel jug.
NEXT TIME!

Billy, I bought one of the small gas cans so I wouldn't have to cut the tray up. I velcroed the electric pump inside the bottom bin. Only problem is I can't hear it run now.

rc_sport, I have a lawn mower battery and a small 1 gal fuel can in mine. I was concerned a little about fumes so I drilled a couple 1 inch vent holes with a hole drill in the bottom bin. now I can also hear my pump run.

Anyone have a part number for this box from Home Depot? I can't seem to find it on their web site.
