I just completed my new fieldbox with on purchased from Walmart. This thing works Great !

Everyone seems to be using different types of fuel containers or cutting trays so a standard fuel jug will work. I used paint cans purchased at Lowes. I didnt have to cut any holes in the tray and the paint cans fit quite nicely in the bottom of the box. The neat thing about paint cans, you can solder to them ! I soldered my fuel inlet and vent right to the side of the can. Once the lid is pressed into place no leaks. I have mine set up with 2 cans, one for glow fuel and one for smoke oil.

I'd like to see a picture of that. I've never heard of anyone using paint cans.

Here is a few pics of the bottom compartment with the paint cans as fuel tanks. I used a 1 gallon for Glow fuel and 1 quart for Smoke Oil.

Just wanted to thank you all for the information on how you each designed your field boxes. I just joined the forum this morning and was looking for new ideas. I have had the Black and Decker rolling tool box for about 2 months now. With all of the ideas here, I can now move from my little wood "no storage" box to one that will have what I need. Thanks to ALL!

Question or maybe comments would be better said, on the paint cans...

I got a gallon can, still does not fit well in the bottom of my black and decker unit, at least standing up. Sideways it might work..

The can I got from Home Depot had a grey coating of some sort on the inside. Currently testing if it is fuelproof or not. Any comments?

Do they seal well enough to be laid on their side??

The paint cans I used didn't have any coating on the inside, just bare metal. So I don't know of the coating issue. As far as sealing on their side ? Good question. I know the cans themselves seal pretty tight. I trust the seal on mine in the upright position but dont really knoe if I would trust them laying down. Dont give up though !! Here is something you can try. If the can will work (coating will handle glow fuel) then solder your fuel fittings to the can and press on the lid. Then you could take a hot soldering iron or small torch and solder the whole lid to the can ! The only disadvantage would be getting to the inside of the can in the future, but it would seal it so there would be no leaks.

no great loss if it does not work, I just happened by a home depot, can was only about $3. I'm going to check lowe's in the next day or so.

I think these cans were made by behr, home depot brand, so these cans might need to be avoided. I put the last bit fuel I had from a gallon of 15% and hammered it shut.

Billy, I just had to have one of these Master Carts for my field box. After reading about having to cut the tray to fit over the fuel jug, I went with a plastic gas can from Wal-Mart. 1gal 4oz. can for $1.93. At first it wouldn't fit on the floor of the box because of the wheelwell. Shimming the floor made the can sit to high and interfered with the tray. Got the heat gun out and heated the corner of the tank until it was soft. Pushed it down over the wheelwell until it cooled. It took several times, but the end result was that it sits flat on the floor with plenty of clearance for the tray. Perfect fit! Thanks guys for all the tips.

And it looks like it won't shift on you and it also looks like it is acting as a battery retainer as well. I wish I had thought of that! Maybe time to buy another. I did get a $25 gift card for target.

the only downside to my monster is the weight..but on the major plus side, I don't spend any time transferring fuel from the original container, to something in the box/cart. I just switch out the full gallon and to me that's worth it.

After reforming that gas can, can you still get a gallon in it??

I cut that little wheel out of the box. My flight line isn't concrete and I knew I wouldn't be rolling the box around a shop floor. The 1.25 gallon gas can covers the opening. The tray above the gas can is unmodified.

The gas can is "1gal. 4oz." Haven't measured it for sure, but I would say that it would still hold a full gallon, figuring I lost the 4 oz. in reforming. I can do a test on it later this week and post it here.

Just checked out my "reformed gas can" and it will hold a full gallon of fuel with some room to spare.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to accommodate the fuel line, and would like to ask for any comments.

I want it to be easy and accessible from the outside, so have been considering hanging a coil of tubing on the outside of the box; but I don't want a risk of siphoning if the fill side line pops off and flops to the floor. On the inside of the tool box I'm planning to try tie-wraps to secure the fuel line, it's just the fill line to the plane that seems like the likely problem. My box is usually in the back of my truck, but sometimes I'm in my wife's SUV, and a spill would be bad news...

The pumps don't have anti siphon protection do they? I've looked around for in-line type valves, but have not found anything.

On another note: I just got my Cermark power panel in the mail; one cool thing is the power for the pump is solder on to the back of the panel (as opposed to banana plugs on the front), which will make it nice for integrating the pump into the box, and not having the plugs on the front.

my fuel pump is soldered on the back of the panel like you mentioned. I did the coil coming out of the pump (mounted externally) at the end of the coil is a filter which I just slide onto the fuel line of my plane. When not in use I slide it on the other fuel line coming from the jug. It comes out through a hole in the side of the box. It has never accidentally come off.

Thanks for all the ideas Billy and others. Just finished mine last night. Think I'm going to love it!!! In the bottom I have all of the necessary starting equipment plus props and plug wrenches, etc. Where you have your transmitter, I put cleaning stuff: paper towels, rags, 409, q-tips etc. Thanks again for all the ideas.

I just read a story about a battery being too close to fuel in a field box and blowing up. That would suck! I am going to put a panel between mine and drill drain holes in the bottom and vent holes in the side for fumes. I think that will do it.

Billy is right. In my old box I had a tool or something short across the battery leads . I figured that old fuel spilled box would catch fire for sure. It was in full sun and I knew I wouldn't see a methanol fire if there was one, so I checked for heat before diving in to fix stuff.
