Where to get decals?

I want to put my name under the canopy on my plane. It's electric so weight is an issue as well as size. I've contacted a couple of decal websites, they either can't make something this small or they want a minimum order of 250 stickers. I would appreciate any info anyone can share with me.

RE: Where to get decals?

You can print them on special decal paper if you have an inkjet printer. Your LHS or hobby/craft store should have some. You can buy it online as well. This is a very economical solution. You can do all sorts of custom graphics with this method.

How to make them yourself...

Find the script font on MS word or other WP program that you like then print it, the size you like.
Next you cut out the words about 1/2" larger than the word.
Now use glue stick, Office Depot is fine. It is water soluable.
Glue the cut out to your favorite colour Monocoat or Trimcoat.
Taking your time and hand cut with a new #10 blade every five minutes.
When you are done cutting it out, spray water on the paper and let soak for a minute then rub the left over paper lettering off.
Stick the lettering where you want with iron or windex method.
Good luck.

RE: Where to get decals?

This is a project I just finished researching and finally getting some results. I did print my own decals for my military converted Cessna 337, and had great results with my finished decals. I used Print Shop for the main layout of the designs and text, then I used a collage program for the arramgement and sizing for printing. I did find the decal paper at my local hobby shop, the last place I looked, as I was trying other medias to do the printing on , with good results with clear packing label material.
The pack of 1.5 sheets of both clear and white backed decal paper in the decal kit was made by Testors, as was the spray sealer to seal the ink on the paper. I needed some stars and bars decals and found the paper has to be white backed to fill in the white areas in the star and bars. I used a combination of vinyl stick on numbers and letters and my home made decals. Designing the nose art was the fun project. The clear decal printer paper designed for ink jet or laser printers I found the best way to go, as the label material even though it was clear had a dull look from the adheasive. The water slide decals are a lot more fragile and a little fussier to apply but the end results are worth it.
I did find the decal paper in larger quantities on line and it was a better value also from several vendors. If I have a project that requires more than this last project, that's the way I'll go for getting the decal paper. Printing your own decals is a lot of fun and your imagination is your only limitation.

RE: Where to get decals?

I read an artical in model aviation mag by Bob Aberle. He gets special water slide decal paper from Bell Inc . Their web site is www.belldecal.com, it works great. You use any word proceser or I use adobe art prgs to make anything you want , from nose art to to tail numbers and so on. Then you print them out on your printer. Then spray them with Krylon clear or Krylon matte that you can get at arts and craft stores like ac moore. This seals the ink on the decal from fuel and water and other solvents. Cut your decal out put it into clean water for 45-60 seconds. when the decal starts to slip on the backing just side it off on to your plane.wipe off the excess water and press out any air bubbles. let it sit for about 3 hours. they are really nice . I did my name on the side off my edge 540 t with cursive hand wrting from word perfect. you can make it any size you like and they weigh nothing. Go to the web site and check it out they have all the instructions. I bought the 8.5x11 starter set with 10 clear sheets and 10 white back sheets for 17.00. you can make a whole bunch of decasl whith it. they work just like the ones you get with plastic models.Hope you try it they are great. your only limited by your imaginantion to what you can make.
