Decal removal for CMP Corsair 120

Question; Ihave a new CMPCorsair 120 with 76" wingspan. Iwas thinking of changing the decals and doing a little weathing.
I was wonding what people have used to remove the decals and not the paint. Iwas thinking of 500 grit sandpaper to revmove any clear coat and then possibly lighter flud to take off the sticky decals.
If you are know the corsair it was the number 133 really big on the fuse. Iwould like to remove that and the larger arrow on the wing and rudder.
any help would be great!</p>

If they are vinyl decals lift an edge with xacto blade and then heat it up and pull.  Of course, be careful of overheat.

Thanks for the tip but I dont think they are vinyl. I do think they are water decals with mat finish clear coat over top.
what Im worried about is the get making sure its fuel proof when iam take the decals off.

I believe they are clearcoated.

You could "mask" the areas that you didn't want to remove or have an effect on. Using a chemical like laquer thinner, you could wash or dislove the clear coat to expose the vinyl. However this may not be necessary.

If you use a #11 blade and gently etch the outline of what you want removed, a bit of heat will allow the vinyl to seperate from the surface of the model. This would allow for only the graphic to be removed.

You can then remove your masks and board sand the clare coate so the edge feathers. Another clear coat may allow for the disappearance of that feathered edge?

May work with some success, Worth the try on the smallest marking you elect to remove.

I do graphicxs and have much experience with paint and clear coats. This is what I would do.

I also would apply the new vinyl markings over the clear coat.

I couldn't get them off my Corsair. I ended up sanding them off and repainting the entire plane.
The star and bar was on the wrong side of the wing, Decal colors were wrong and other decals were misspelled.
In the end I was glad I did paint.

Looks Great! what paint did you use? I kind of thinking the same think, only I was just going to sand off some of the lettering. Then paint clear rustolem over the top to seal it.

I used exterior latex and cleared it with Top Flite Flat clear Lusterkote.
I had Home Depot color match the blue. I was just going to use it for touch ups. I mixed the blue with some white that I had for the lighter shade of blue.

Try your method first. It'll be a lot less work. I spent about two weeks with an air brush.

Thanks for you help. I just re-read what you typed about the markings. I checked mine same problem, the stars and bars are on the wrong wing!!! So now i have to remove them more work! I dont think I want to change everything but I may have to.
Did you use vinyl lettering?
Also see you have the oil coolers instill on the wings. I dont like extra material on the ones i have so plan to trim them down and use may some foam on inside.

I had a local guy make the Vinyl numbers, I sent out and had one piece star/bars made, and I made all the other decals.

I haven't painted my oil coolers yet. That's why they're not installed yet.

Well, it's not the CMP, it's the H9, but making your own vinyl markings are all the same.

Link shows you how.

I bought mine NIB and didn't like the markings. I cheated and bought decals but made the skull and crossbones. I know my decals aren't scale but IMO better then the supplied graphics.
One word of caution on the tri-color color scheme is that it can be difficult to see when flying because it is a camo scheme and blends with the white clouds and blue sky so keep it close.

Wilson, Ditto phatbob's tip on paint from Home Depot, or Lowes for that matter. I had em mix up both colors for mine. Didn't go with the clear, as mine was electric, and I liked the flat finish better. Thin the paint down with water or washer fluid and you can spray it out of an HVLP or even an airbrush.

As for the decals, I'd just sand the areas the decals cover, and respray. Lot easier then trying to remove em and taking the chance of damaging the covering.
Something I found on a couple of the NitroPlanes/CMP birds that have a painted finish over covering. Often the covering under the paint is a completly different color. Like they used what ever they had laying around to cover the bird, then sprayed it.

My 120 scale P47 had dark brown covering, under the light green paint job.

Really liked this bird, (Corsair)I built my own retracts, even the tailwheel, and modded all the flight controls A/E/R, to internals so no draggy control horns.

Well Ok.. after putting the corsair aside for over a couple of years. I have justed into with both feet. It took me about 3 hours of wetsanding with 600 grit sandpaper, but i did .. I removed the decals. Check out the pics.

Now the next step is to remove the covering that is on the outter wing panels then glasses them. I plan to use warbird color brand paint.

My plan is color after the VMF 512 of the USS Gilbert Islands.

If you give the model a few weeks in the hot sun the entire covering will come off.

Sand the fuse ones, and keep laquer thinner away from polyester resin fuses. Will soften the resin chemically. Not like the sun that you can move your plane out of to cool.

Steve.. Thanks ...I plan to take a warm knife to the covering.. and do it slowing to remove the covering from the foam core sheeted wing panels.

Thanks on the laquer thinner and keep it away from fuse that was a good reminder.
