To open the gear box you have to remove the assembly from the chassis. There are two collars pressed onto the shaft on both ends that hold the gearbox to the chassis. You can use two pliers to remove them. Hold one collar while grabbing the other collar and lightly twist while pulling it off the shaft then remove the shaft and gearbox. The other way to do it is to support one collar with a socket and use a punch and hammer to push the shaft down and off of the other collar. Be sure to use a socket small enough to support the collar but that is big enough to let the shaft pass through. You should remove the rear shocks before removing the gearbox. You can use a small flat blade screwdriver to lightly pry the shock pins up enough to be able to grab them with pliers and then just pull them out. Use light pressure when doing this as you can break the shock mounts very easily.
