You need to make sure that the rust spots are not another material being sprayed on there. For instance gear dust? Just a thought. Aluminum doesnt rust.

hi, if its aluminum it is probably oxidation and will buff off. if they gave you steel it is rust and isnt going to come off.

rub harder? or, get some engine cleaning liquid, i forget what its called. not nitro cleaner. the stuff used on real cars, it takes rust off of anything and doesnt hurt parts. my friend used some on an '84 XR80 (honda dirtbike) and soaked all of the parts for 2 weeks. what used to be a pile of durt and rust was a old style new shiney bike. it was pretty crazy to see that much of a difference.

I assume your hex hubs are ally. IF you take wire wool or any other abrasive material and rub MILD steel, you will impregnate that mild steel into the abrasive. IF you then rub even stainless steel with the same abrasive, that will become impegnated with the mild steel particles, which can then rust. Its not the stainless or ally thats rusting, its those mild steel particles. I assume the same is true for ally. When we fabricate with stainless materials, we can never use anything, abrasives, cutting blades, files etc that have been used with mild steel. This COULD be your problem.

If you remember the name of the stuff... let us know.
Would soaking it for a week in carb cleaner act like a mini hot tank?

I have some pretty cruddy looking engine heads that could use a good cleaning.
