TMaxx - Proper transmission lube?
Tranny breakdown commenced ...
The tranny's almost dry on the inside. Only a hint of lubrication found. But everything looks to be in one piece.
What is the best lubrication to use in the tranny? I used multi-purpose automotive grease in my diffs. Is it ok to use the same grease in the tranny?
Should the tranny be packed with grease/lube or should the grease be applied only to the gears?
Best practice?
Thanks.

RE: TMaxx - Proper transmission lube?
Do not use any lubrication inside the transmission.
Any lube could cause the owb to slip and keep you from moving at all or it could cause the centrifical clutches to stick keeping you from having 2nd gear or forward/reverse.
If you clean and reoil the bearings be sure you get them sealed back up well.

They say no lube is the way to go. Although, Ive experimented with Associated Stealth lube in my Revo. Ive been through a gallon of fuel since I did this, and have had no problems. The tranny is a foward-only, and is silky smooth, with no slip in the 2 speed.

As was said, they are "dry" trannies, and debates can be started either way, but I prefer a light "brushed on" coat of white lithium grease, directly on the gear teeth. Probably 90% is thrown off the first time the truck is spoolled up......but the gears had a light coating to aid those first few seconds when new gears began messin with other new gears....in theory, promoting a good break-in......
Does it work ? Is it worth the trouble ?
Who knows......but in the 20 + years I've been doing it on plastic geared trannies......it's done no harm. So to me, it's like a security blanket....necessry or not, cost is very cheap, detriments seem to be zero....I'm an ole man set in my ways....I'll continue.....but I'll fault no one for putting them up dry either.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I figured as much since there wasn't hardly anything in it to begin with. Once I put it back together it seems the tranny's a little tight, but it does turn. I'm hoping it'll wear back in without problems. Otherwise I guess it's another trip to the LHS and another fun breakdown!!

If I were running steel gears....I'd probably come up with a "wiches brew" of white litium grease, witha little graphite powder mixed in, and brushed on the gears. Then I'd probably be openning it up every hour or o of operation to "re-paint" the gears....
But then again...that's just me.... http://nitroobsession.proboards79.com/index.cgi horsepower and longevity are where it's at!

I only have 1 metal to metal gear set in my maxx tranny....I just use the dry stuff....small amounts of grease I've seen work and some be a hassle.....it's prefference...the only thing you want to limit is the 2 speed clutch getting full of grease or other lubes.....other than that if you have a single speed S-maxx tranny w/ FOC.... grease dem puppies

I got some dry teflon SPRAY at a bike shop ('chain lube') & I used some on my tranny gears during a recent repair job. I didn' spray it all over...just kinda dribbled it on the gear teeth.
this stuff is GREAT for this & CVDs....it dries completely (no dirt attraction) while the teflon stays on & does it's thing.
