T-Maxx 2.5 jumpy starts.
Hey guys I just got back into this after 3.5 years of rc planes. I wound up with a 2.5 in a trade. I got all the parts it needed, and I've been driving it, but the starts from a stop are really jerky. Anyone know what causes this? It would be great to get it fixed.

Yes, that's normal for all Maxx's except the new 3.3.
It's caused by the reverse lock out mechinism in the transmission.
It can be fixed one of two ways.
Installing a FOC - forward only conversion will do it but you lose reverse, obviously.
Or making this mod will stop the jerkiness and preserve reverse. I did this to my Maxx and it works great.

I was actually responding to ICE_MAN's initial post, but in the time it took me to type my small response... two others had already responded... go figure :P
Strangely, I haven't experienced this problem on my 2.5 yet.

No, not reverse, the reverse lockout mechinism.

The reverse?

Dave G nailed it. All maxxes except the 3.3 will jerk on initial acceleration as a result of the f/r shifting mechanism. It is a simple set of gears with pawls that rotate in a pegged drum and only engage at a certain RPM. They tend to be very jerky if you ease onto the throttle, but will be less noticeable the quicker you accelerate off the line.
I second the recoomendation on the mod. That is the absolute best mod you can do to a maxx, if you like keeping reverse of course. And the only cost is a single brake disc grub screw... Makes me smile every time I think about it.

Well I had heard such stories, and had planned on the FOC but I wanted to make sure that was the problem. My tuning is fine, I guess it has to be the FOC. If I get this FOC, what's a good gear ratio to go to to get good low-end, and decent top end with only a single speed?

The forward only is a two speed conversion. You just lose reverse. Generally the gearing is adjusted by changing the clutch bell and /or the spur gear. Although the Revo 3.3 has wide and close ratio gears sets available for the transmission they won't fit the 2.5 T-Maxx's.
