RE: 2.5r ate itself!
i had great luck with my latest 3.3, it's at 4 gallons, hasn't lost any power at all from new, with a good tune and the slipper set tight it will pull wheelies (it's in my brother revo now), a lot of people have had bad luck with them, but i think thats because theres a lot of them out there, i'v had people try to tell me that there arn't as many 3.3s as there are os .18's but i can tell ya, there are a lot of 3.3 engines out there, i believe thats the reason why there are so many that are breaking.

Hey Jarett,
I saw how the whole deal went down with that engine in the other post. I didn't want to say this as it might offend, but that engine breaking (ie "eating" itself) may have been at your hands. Yes, the 2.5r engine is really hard to tune, especially if it's not broken in properly and I've made the mistake of rushing a break-in with bad results. I bought a new 2.5 (yeah, a little silly, but this was before the 3.3 came out) and tuned that one by the book and it's running like mad 4.5 gallons later.
Now, why I said this might be at your hands?? Well, it was midway between when you pulled down the engine the first time and then when you ran it and then pulled it down the second time. Do you remember when you had a problem putting the back plate on. You mentioned that you tightened it as tight as you could and you still wouldn't get the rubber "O" ring to go into the engine. I believe, IMO that this was where the mishap occured. Once again, I'm not trying to "blame" you for that misfortune, I just wanted to point something out. While the things we work on in this hobby are quite tough, don't underestimate the amount of torque your arm can generate.
Just as a warning to those who don't already know, if something was meshed nicely before you took it apart, it shouldn't take much to mesh it back again (with the exception of spur gears, but that's another thread).
Once again, I'm not trying to point fingers.... just want you to see what could have saved you that engine and hopefully save you some other part down the line.. BUT hey, you got that O.S. .18 outta it, right!!

Mine lasted 7 gallons and its still running (like crap, almost no compression). Its in pieces though now. I donated some parts to my bros 2.5R which also self destructed inside lol

RE: 2.5r ate itself!
everyone seems to hate them ol' spur gears for some reason, i find it easy to adjust them, i get the mesh very tight, then i loosen it off by hittng my cooling head with the soft handle of a file i have to avoid damaging it until theres no binding in the gears, then i test the mesh by holding the CB still with my finger and seeing how much slop there is by moving the spur gear back and forth, i like there to be that little slop that it's almost not noticeable, but there must be a little bit.

RE: 2.5r ate itself!
yeah i think u are right it was partly my fault, but i didint know what i was doing and im glad i did it on a 2.5 instead of a new picco or something. im just glad i learned about the engine and how it works. i can now say i can take my engine apart and put it back togethor without breaking anything [sm=thumbup.gif]

If you can master the art of tuning a TRX, then you've mastered the art of tuning No engine, especially big blocks, have ever been so finnicky to tune. I left my old S-25 sitting for the whole summer while I was in Europe. I came back 2 months later and fired her up and turned the HSN 1/8th and I was done. Im glad I entered the big block world, small blocks run hot and just generally are a pain in the arse out of my experiences. I think Ill sell my Maxx already and get a plane There aint no way though that ill ever sell my Savage with my STS .30, just no damn way lol[>:][8D] My Sirio .18 is a lot better than any TRX in the tuning department though and in power, I love it. I havent radared it but its got really high revs and pushes the Maxx to a good 42-44mph. Problem is if I hit a bump or rut at that speed and lose control my truck is gone.... Thats why I love my Savage, its heavy but the suspension just absorbs everything, I love it

Great attitude Jarett!!
Very true, i'd rather a 2.5 mess up on me than that 18TM.. I'd sure be miffed if messed up an OS. I do wonder if Traxxas would let you trade that old 2.5 for a 3.3 upgrade though??
... things that make you go, HMMMMMMM??![>:]

8+ gallons on my 2.5, but I replaced the piston and sleeve 7 gallons ago. I think I might buy a picco.26 pretty soon though, after running my friends mbx5t with a ninja in it, the 2.5 feels like it is going as fast as a slug.

Everyone has a O.S 18TM! I mean, ya they are easy to tune, but when I am spending 100+ on a engine for a RC Car, I want something a bit faster. It's why I went with the Picco .26 over the TM, but I might have to check out the 21tm.
