that little black temp guage
Me and some of my friends use that black inflared temp gun. Mine is showing at one point 30 deg. lower than there's. the battery shows full. is mine just junk. when tuning my cars it shows the temp around 189 to 210. so i lean her out. (220to 240 ) it starts to run like crap so i lean it alittle more, then it cut out. at that point i know i have richen it back up. that fixes it but the temp gun reads between 150to 180. they run great after that at 150 to 180. Is my gun crap?

What's the air temp? What temp gun do you have? (a link or a picture would be nice)
Do you know some one who has a different temp gun?

clean the IR lens or the part that you point and are you sure you had it pointed at your glow plug hole?
also the IR lens is the most important part of the whole thing.

RE: that little black temp guage
with it being 48 your temps could really be 150-175, but one way to check is put a drop of water on the head (by the glow plug) and if it takes about 2-3sec to boil away that means you're running about 220-230 if longer then you're running 200> temps and that would mean your temp gun is right.
If your temp gun is right and you are running in the 150-175 then you need to wrap the head with alum foil. If you are running in the 150-170 you should be able to grab the head with your hand.

I use a Raytek MT4 its suppose to be the most accurate temp gun, but they do have the draw backs. Like how you read the temp makes a big difference. You just have to move it around till you find where it reads the hottest temps, then that's how you have to check the temps. Some people hold the temp guns (using a Raytek) up off the head and use the laser but that will cause it to read low. I was doing that (holding it about 2-3" off the head and using the laser it would read 200-210 but when I put it on the head it would go up to 260-270)

A guy at our track uses this 250 dollar temp gun, I'm like damn I could have a new motor for that much money, He is talking about how good it is and everything, So i'm like hey temp my motor, he temps it think it was something like 210 or so. Then I use my crappy 29 dollar duratrax temp gun and it was 1 degree diffrent, I couldn't help busting out laughing,
