Are the .15, 2.5, 2.5R, & 3.3 all junk?
I have the original .15 T-MAXX.
I loved it when I got it but it didn't take long for the engine to act up. One day the thing would run awsome and the next it wouldn't start. After half a day to get running it would die everytime it got 200 feet away so you had to chase it down. All my friends sold theirs years ago. I'll pull it out at least once a year and give it a try but really gave up on it about 5 years ago.
I was looking at it today. All the wires fell apart on the starter. I was going to re-solder them into the white plug. I can't get the metal parts out of the plug so gave up after running an awe through my thumb! 2 holes about 1/4" apart.
I thought I might find one cheap on eBay but they were all the 2.5 or REVO one piece starter. Anyone know if that still works on mine?
I haven't kept up with the updates but I see there was the 2.5, 2.5R, and 3.3. Then I seen the engine exchange program. Screw this engine, $85 to exchange it for a 2.5R or $110 for a 3.3 plus $25 for the upgrade kit. I was ready to go tomorrow and exchange mine.
I looked on here to see if the 2.5R or the 3.3 was better. I seen people talking about the same old tuning problems. I don't understand this. I fly planes and have several OS .40FX and .46FX engines and they run perfect.
So are they all junk? Will I be wasting my money getting the same tuning problems? If so is there an engine that fill drop in and run at least 95% of the time without any/much modification?

There not really junk, there just not the best. When Compared to O.S, Picco, Dynamite, RB, Nova Rossi and others there not as good. There quality lags behind that of these after market engine's. But to say that they are all junk isnt really fair. Now I dont really like the trx model of engine's, but as far as I'm concerned there not junk. There just not up to par with some of the after market engine's.
But as far as getting another engine a O.S would be better, like a TZ or a CVR there much better quality and are much more reliable.

I hated my 3.3 and will never buy another one. It's just pissy as far as tuning goes. I have other engines that I like much, much more than the 3.3.

RE: Are the .15, 2.5, 2.5R, & 3.3 all junk?
An engine that takes several battery packs to start, won't idle, dies any old time is junk in my book. In my group there were at least 10 T-MAXXs. All had the same problems and every time I went to the hobby store there were people in there trying to get theirs tuned. My OS plane engines are all around 8 years old and I don't have to touch a thing. I'll check the high speed screw at the beginning of the season but that's it. They will idle though a whole tank of fuel, they do not die, they start right up. To compare them my .15 is junk.
So say they are not junk. I just wanted to know if the others suffer from the same problems. I'm not going to waste money and end up with the same headaches.
I'm looking on the OS site. They have 2 that are drop ins for the T-MAXX. 18TM and 21TM. I don't want any mod work. Drop in is what I want.

those "drop in" engines take work... with the old pro .15, you need a side exhaust rotary carb engine for it to be a droop in, go to towerhobbies and get the OS .18 CV RX, it's right around $100, much more power than the pro .15, and runs better and more predictable... the only modification you'll have to do to bolt it on is to cut the crankshaft a little bit shorter with a dremel or something, just tighten the nut that comes on the engine down and cut the shaft at the end of that. you will have to use the pull start that comes with the engine and a glow warmer (but you fly planes, so you probably have one or two)
the problem with the old ez start stuff was the glow ignitor portion, it didn't get the plug too warm, and the wires wore out, the chassis side is transferable from the new stuff, and I think the new starter wands work on the old EZ starts, but I haven't tried personally, I've got a few spares of the old types and have a couple of the new types, but prefer pull starts and a real glow starter...

No problems out of my 3.3's but my 2.5 can be a pita when it wants too. Not junk. If you have issues with the carb leaking because of cracks in the carb etc just replace it with a O.S. 11k carb and your good to go.

My 3.3 just died and I got almost 6 gallons out of it and had no probs tuning, it was the least finicky engine I have ever owned. My 2.5R on the other hand was JUNK!Ive had All sorts of engines,my favorites out of the bunch were my TRX 3.3 and my Picco .21.My Axial .28 spec 1s was a great engine but had a 3 needle carb (3000 feet elevation) and i could never get it tuned right, but when it ran good it hauled! I d give the 3.3 a try, plus Traxxas goes above and beyond with helping with whatever issues you have.Ive had really good luck with Traxxas.

The TRX 3.3 is the only engine Ive had that ran flawless every time.I wanted to buy another but wanted to do a big block conversion with a Picco.

I have a 2.5R in my Nitro Stampede and it runs like a top and has insane power for that truck. The 2.5R is a great motor for $85. Granted, it is not the best out there, but it is really not that bad.
You guys need to learn how to tune or something....

I have no tuning issues except for the fact of having elevation and humidity to tend with When you have real performance engines.I have 9 cars and all run perfect.I think the 2.5R is a far from OK engine.I wouldn't go buy one when there are so many better choices.Traxxas should have never put the 2.5R in anything but the Stampede or Rustler Its far to underpowered to be in anything bigger.

RE: Are the .15, 2.5, 2.5R, & 3.3 all junk?
I think the 3.3 is a great engine for the Revo. I've put countless gallons on my 3.3 engines and they have always been very reliable, held tune perfectly, started up instantly, got good run times (fuel mileage), and put out decent power... especially modded.
Ive had nothing but GOOD luck with my 3.3 engines.
Im not saying they are the best engines... but they are far from junk. IMO, they are better than most RTR engines.

I think it's hit or miss with the TRX engines. I bought 2 Revo's... broke 'em in the same way, the same time, with the same fuel. One of 'em was PERFECT. Tuned it once... never had to again.... the other... not so perfect. Had to be tuned almost every time I went out.... I still liked it... and it still runs today (it's about 3 years old)... but, I wouldn't use it as a replacement engine for an aftermarket (O.S., RB, Novarossi, etc) If I were to spend the $$, I'm getting bigger and better.

They are junk.. one of the worst RTR motors IMO
Every traxxas engine I have messed with about 4.. have had the same problems, AIRLEAKS! or some major part failure,
Best RTR motor I've used has been the Mach 427

RE: Are the .15, 2.5, 2.5R, & 3.3 all junk?
well from my experience with my .15 and 2.5 is fine. i actually had my 2.5 sitting in my garage for about a year and a half and charge my igniter put gas in the tank and it started right up and has been running pretty much hassle free for the last 4 months which i have ran about 5 gallons through. To me it seems to come down to break in and engine management if you take care of something it will last unless its just a lemon.
