Can someone recommend a better pull starter?
I've been using a pull starter for the last few months with absolutely no problems until just recently. Within the last 3 weeks, I've broken two pull starters. With both of them, the problem was the spool that the cord winds around. Spool breaks, then the cord jams, then the cord snaps. I'm definitely NOT buying another Traxxas pull starter, but I have a few questions. I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything to cause this. Does Traxxas sell individual parts for the pull starter? Can anyone recommend a GOOD, WELL BUILT, compatible pull starter? (Please don't recommend a starter box, I'd convert to brushless before I'd consider that, as I only bash.)
Thanks.
Thanks.

A starter box is 100% out of the question. Too big to carry around while bashing, too expensive, and another battery to keep charged. I don't need to remove the body to start or fill my tank either.

RE: pull starter problems
pull starts break and OWB's go out...to relive all this u need a starter box. to get away from pull starts you could go roto start buy you still have to deal with OWB's
you can make your own starter box for pretty cheap with basic electrical and wood working skills

I don't mind OWBs, no problems with them. I'm asking if anyone knows a good alternative to the Traxxas pull starter. I'm not looking to be converted to starter boxes. It's not going to happen.

Double check it, but it very much seems that this pullstarter will work: http://www.ofna.com/eng-picco-26max.php

see if os makes one for the .18 / .21 tm engines
or picco for the .26 picco maxx engine
or rb for the 323 or 523
if they do then they will bolt right on
it will still be a pull start though
and sometimes
they just break
no matter who made it

ROTO START..The battery will last all day, you dont need to pull the body off either and fits in your back pocket also. I would not even consider a pull start after using a roto start. And I'm not a big fan of bump boxes either (I have 2..for my truggies). Plus they are for the most part trouble free especially when compared to a pull start. For bashing they are the Only Choice for ease of use, fits in your tool box also..

I tired a pull start and was very quickly convinced not to ever use one again unless I have to. Traxxas pulls are some of the best out there from what people have told me and from reading on the forums.

RE: Can someone recommend a better pull starter?
as far as pull starts "just breaking", and traxxas making some of the best... here's what happened to both of my traxxas pull starters.... exactly the same break. it's obviously a flaw with that piece. plastic not thick/strong enough or something...
thanks to those who actually recommended a different pullstarter, rather than trying to sell me on rotostart and starterboxes. I'll check them out.

I'm tending to lean towards the pull starters for the mid blocks. I have a picco .26 max. I think the traxxas pullstart was designed for the 2.5, so might not be strong enough for turning over the .26

heres a stupid question how far do you pull your pull cord? I had a traxxas pull start last me 10 gallons. so WTH are you doing? your only supposed to pull them maybe a foot
also I say that because I see your cords dirty to almost the end.

you FORGOT to mention you had a .26 untill the last post. try loosening your glow plug 1/4 turn you could just have to much compression and its breaking from pulling on it. its short yanks not like a lawnmower

RE: Can someone recommend a better pull starter?
I never pull them til they reach the end of the cord. It's a pretty long cord. My first traxxas pullstart lasted about 3 months, second one lasted 3 weeks. It's probably just too weak for the bigger engine. My picco has a pretty strong pinch too. What engine were you running when you got 10 gal. out of the traxxas pullstart?
edit - only one of them is visibly dirty (one on the right in pic). That's the older one. When it broke, I took it apart, CA'd the spool together, and put it back together. It worked for another few runs, then broke again. Then I bought a new one, which is still pretty clean, except for a bit of a greyish tint from using blue thunder fuel for a few bashing sessions.

I messed up my axial pull starter on the very first gallon in my .32. During break in, bb motors put so much stress on pull starters.

Yeah, that's all you need. The traxxas owb won't fit in the picco pullstart. I don't know if it's any stronger than the traxxas, that's what I'm trying to find out myself.

exactly how much money would I have saved?
if saving money was my main goal, I would have chosen a different hobby.
