Default Emaxx motor meltdown HELP!

I am a nitro guy and know little about electric setups. I recently purchased a used Emaxx for my nephew and had to replace the ESC.I was able to pick up an EVX2 ESC for brushed system. I also upgraded the batteries to 2x 6cell 4600mah 7.2v. Unfortunately I had a motor meltdown. Now i must purchase a new set of motors and I believe I may neeed to change the gear ratio but do not know what to change them to.
I want cheap motors for general bashing by a 12 year old.

Currently installed:
Motor: Trinity Monster 17x1, RPM 22.287, Power 144.3w, Eff 62.2%, Torq 272Nmm.
Spur gear: 66T
Pinion gear: 18T
ESC: EVX2 16.8v
Batteries: 2x 7.2v 4600mah

Can anyone tell me what is wrong and what would be the proper setup? Keep in mind this is for a beginner. I would like to keep decent runtime, motors and ESC to remain cool. Not needeng stupid top end speed but dont want to leave snail trails. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Is it okay to run 14.4v batts and 14.4v motors on a 16.8v ESC? What are pros or cons of doing this?

It is just fine to run those motors/batts on that esc. The motors you have will burn up quickly though. If you want to use them then they should be wired in series OR the voltage dropped. If you choose stock type motors then they'll hold up ok if geared conservatively.

What would be ideal? I mean what turn of motor should I use if running 66T spur and 18T pinion? Or is 66t and 18t wrong?
