Douglas DC-7
Hello all-
Since Having assembled and painted a 144 scale Pan AM Douglas DC-7,I have been in the thinking stages of scratch building one for my second 'Multi R/C'----- I would like the Douglas to have a wing span around 80+ inches,powered with either electric or glow. I would appreciate any Infromation that would enable draw the plans for one

If memory serves me right I have a magazine somewhere with drawings and photos of a DC7 in SAS livery. It is unfortunately in Swedish but I can scan it for you if wish.

Richard....There are some DC-6 kits still around and it probably wouldn't be a difficult conversion...adding some fuselage formers and some wing ribs along with a more square tail and several horizontal stab ribs ...you could be in business.....I'm building an old Kyosho kit from 30 yrs ago( Thanks to Bob in Hawaii)...and its coming along slow but sure...(other projects to do as well)....Let us know what you find out...Good Luck...Bill......

Richard,
Count me in on the DC-6 or 7. Have always wanted to build one in the 80 to 90" WS range. There was an ad in one of the model magazines about 10 years ago for a set of plans. I will look it up tomorrow and post the info for you.

I scratchbuilt a DC6 a few years ago and posted some photos here on RCU. Do a search in this forum and the Giant Scale forum. It's nice to see some interest in these kinds of airplanes. Good luck with your 7 and keep us posted on your progress.

I did not mean that based on the DC-7 I think the "C-54" was a DC-4:need less to say from the Douglas DC-4 thru & series there certainly are similarities.
Can any one suggest a source for scale drawings of the DC-4/7 series then I can call Dave Platt and add his building/designing from scratch to my Platt construction video collection

The C-47 (Navy R4D) was the military version of the DC-3.
The C-54 (Navy R5D) was the military version of the DC-4.
I don't remember the mil designators of the DC-6 and DC-7.
The DC-4 and DC-6 had only one way to tell then apart easily - the DC-4 had rectangular passenger windows, it did not have a pressurized cabin. The DC-6 had rounded windows, it did have a pressurized cabin.
Between the '6 and '7 there were many differences, none great, but in combination if you put the two planes side by side they are unmistakable.

Actually, the DC-4/C-54 has the round/oval windows and R-2000 engines of 1400 to 1600 HP with three blade props, and is unpressurized. The wing span is 117 ft.
The DC-6 is the C-118 in military service. It has square/rectangular windows and is pressurized. The fuselage was stretched over the DC-4, and the vertical fin/rudder is larger to accommodate the larger R-2800 engines of 2000+ HP, with three blade square tipped props.
The DC-7 was stretched again and has R-3350 engines OF 3200-3500HP, with four blade square tipped props. It was not used by the military as far as I know. The vertical and horizontal stabilizers were again lengthened a bit.
All of the DC-4-7 series aircraft except the DC-7C use the same wing span of 117ft span. This is why the square tipped large area props were used on the '6 and '7 due to the limited distance between the fuselage and the inboard nacelles, and the requirement to absorb more power in the same prop diameter.
The DC-7C (Seven Seas) was a long range airliner, The wing was lengthened with plugs at the fuselage that increased the span by 6 or so feet. The vertical fin was lengthened again a bit, and the top of the fin was squared off even more.
Both the DC-6 and 7 could use the main LG as a speed brake like the B-47 and others.
A friend of mine and I have sporadically been drawing a 1/12 scale set pf plans for the DC-6, based on the Heller 1/72 plastic kit, pictures, and as set of Kyosho plans of the C/L DC-6 from the '60s.
This is another one of those 'someday' projects to do in the future.

Is there a source of scale 3 views and cross sections out there for the DC6 or 7? Oh and by the way my love affair with the big Douglas began as a child on a United flight with the stewardess giving me a set of united wings and you know what I've been fascinated with women/Douglas DCs ever since............

I recieved the documentation today the 3 views for the DC-6 look great and the cockpit drawings all the material is very usable stay in touch.

For what its worth, I have comisioned a friend of mine to draw up the plans for the DC 7 at 141" span. which translates to 1/10.5 scale. The engines to be used will be the RCV 90's turning 4 blade props at 16" dia. Hope this helps.

There is at least two of us and maybe a 3rd that is going to build this particular scale. The more the merrier, for parts such as the cowlings and retracts.
The drawings should be ready for printing anytime now.
That is one good looking Golden Retreiver. I know I have one, you goto love them

Gentlemen......I am in the process of moving......as soon as I get settled in I will post some pictures of the DC-6 I am building from an old Kyosho kit......I also am finishing up a Ziroli Bearcat and when thats completed ...I have a Don Smith "Connie" ready to put together...with the tip tanks will be close to 140" span......I worked on all of the aircraft that have been dicussed here.....flew as an Engineer on the "six"...and whlie I was moving some boxes came across an old"Connie"Maintenance Manual.....sure brought back some great memories........and Roger....I would also be interested in those DC-7 plans......would be a nice match to a 1049 "Connie"......same powerplants.......Happy Holidays.....Bill.....

As soon as they are availlable I will mention it here. They are being developed by Joe Huntley from 3 views and not from someone elses plans.
It has been one of my favorites since a long time and knowing his knowledge with designing, I asked him if he could come up with something. He is just about finished and it has created a lot of interest.
I am not selling these, I will purchase a set from him like everyone else.

Hi Guys I am coming close to the completion of the plans. I have most everything drawn just have the nacelles mainly left to do. The gear I dont have any idea abt right now this will be a fend for yourself bit on the gear as roger said he was going to make his own so if you dont mind having to figure that little bit out its fine. Darrell at sierra retracts said he could whip a set of gear for it out pretty easily as I sent him pic of the nose gear but I am really needing to find pics etc of the main gear and the dorrs so if anyone can help out here with pics it would help. I am looking at sometime in jan hopefully to be finished with the plans.
