RE: Marutaka P-38
Hi John
So Glad. I purchased a P-38 Royal kit on E bay and and as you can imagine it left a lot to be desired. I am a petty good builder but cant believe the kit is so poor. I got the two sheets of plans but no instructions. At this point in time i am trying to lay out the right wing and am worried that I will build in some twist as there are no temporary aft supports for the ribs. Do you have any advice on how I should layout the wing so that I do not build any twist in the wing.
Best regards
Kevin

Kevin as I indicated in my post #10 back in 2004 I did not do the initial building of my Royal 38 but rather completed it and would feel comfortable trying to suggest anything. My later racing 38's which I did build were both Wing manufacturing kits although only one inch in span difference they both were much lighter and much better flyers.
My Red Wing Yippee was lost in its second season of racing but the Blue Yuppee suvived two seasons and still gets a rare shaking out although retired from racing.

RE: Marutaka P-38
Thanks anyway. I have a aircraft engineer friend who is coming over on Monday and we will figure it out. I just want to be so careful. Last year I built a Spitfire only to find I built in some twist in one wing. It was heart breaking as it was such a beautiful plane. are you the only one on this forum.? I was so hoping that I would be able to talk to a builder of this kit. There are so many other issues that will come up and being able to speak to someone who may have already resolved the issue.

RE: Marutaka P-38
I built a Royal P38 a long long time ago, it flew like a missle on two 60 two strokes, but I was always afraid to throttle back because I was afraid to lose an engine. It lasted three flights before I did lose an engine, it went in fast and hard. Back then it was pretty much the king kit out there, quite challegeing. Covered in Presto, which was a silver chrome materiel, it looked beautiful.
Make up some blocks to prop up the ribs while you build. Until you get the top of the wing sheeted, it is easy to buid a warp in. But I have flown many planes with a warp or two, usually you will be okay unless you plan on flying competition like pattern, in whch case thrown out teh warped plane and start over. But a scale plane like this, a warp will probably mean you just need to add some trim.
Also one thing, on Royal kits you save a lot of weight if you hollow out all the balsa blocks, carve and sand the outsides then cut the blcoks off, hollow them, and glue them back. And on the P38 there are a lot of blocks, this really can save a lot of weight.

Hi Kevin,
I started this same kit several years ago, and it's still half-finished. I bought two Axi 2028 electic motors for it (and two Nicad battery packs which weigh a TON, and I'm sure are no good now anyway if I get back to it, I'll use Lipo). Basically I figured electric would prevent any single-engine out issues, but I also picked up a gyro at an auction, based on another post discussion for P-38's where a gyro in the rudder servo circuit can save your tail in an engine out.
I have Springair retracts for it, and have worked out fowlerflaps, prety much copying this post of the most awesome P-38 fowler flaps setup I've seen at this scale.
But, I'm currently building a Platt Zero, because I need an 80" warbird to join my local GS WB club...
Good luck!
