Hi Guys,
I have the origonal manual for the B-17 and the Corsair.
I also have the original shipping receipt and purchase receipt.
Frankly I only read the manual for laughs, the kit really puts itself together if you look at the plans. I did a lot of plan studying before I began. In the corner of each plan shows a mini assembly of all the major componenants. These are better than the written manual, but I have them if you want them. I will photo copy thema nd send em to ya.

Let me know

Ok,

To be fair it has been awhile since i built a kit. Like 4-5 years . That being said however i am not a first timer and have built many kits. But geezz i have never built a round (sort of round) fuse on a flat board.

Any one have any tricks to get started? I started with F5 - f10 because they were flat on the bottom and I marked the stringers to give the locations of the formers but it is like balancing a marble on a glass table. It does not help that i like to dryfit and make sure i have it right before i glue anything.

Hi,
Ya I know what youmean. I spent some time and built legs for my formers so they would stay upright on my board suspended in the right position over the plans. I started by drilling a small hole in the center of each former and running a small dowel through to hold them into perfect alignment, then made the legs. I then ran my stringers and life was good. I also only glued the stringers on one former at a time to reduce warpage. The only other way i know is to use a wing jig. I've used this method, it works well also.

hope this helps

Use Cyano glue and kicker, once you have your part exactly where you want it. Instant bond (it'll actually smoke when you spritz the glue with the kicker!). Get it at your local hobby shop.

Good luck!

Ok, Fuse is mostly framed up and the vertical fin is done.

Looking over the sheets that show where parts are on the pre cut balsa i am unsure of one piece. it is marked in Chinese or Japanese characters and is on the same sheet ar R20A and right above W10.

I think it is for the fuse but not really sure where. I have held off on the fuse until i get it figured out.

Any help out there?

O.K. I see it.

Yup that goes above the wing on the fuse, kinda like a wing saddle but upper. Seems to fill in where the ribbing and sheeting fails to. Ill try and take a picture of my fuse so you can see it.

Here are some pics of where it would go. As you can see I do not have mine on yet. Figured there would be some fitting involved with the wing once it is sheeted.

Great thread - has anyone given thought to the question posed about electric power? I would miss the sound but my neighbors would not...

WOW, Thanks everyone.... Ummm...I know of one othe rperson and they did swap it to electric, after some lightening of the fuselage. It looks and flys well according to him, but really needed some hefty battery and motor set up.
Even well trimmed this is notoriouse for being a little squirrlly on te ground as you run up the engines to gain ground speed for take off.
I'll post some more pics soon.

Silly me - of course I posed my question about electric power, THEN discovered the thread on electric conversion! All of these Royal B17 threads will help immensely - thanks to all.

Was there ever a response to the question about a scale cockpit being available for this kit?

Is there any need for a mostly built Royal B-17???
Has all the parts [as far as I know], built and glassed, but never finished.

I bought a partially complete Royal B-17. I am wondering a couple of things:

1. Has someone installed electric motors in this model before? What size motors and props are recommended?
2. The cockpit features, sights, seats, guns, etc. are pretty low quality. Is there a manufacturer that makes a better version of these items for the 1/16 scale model?
3. The decals and markings were missing from the kit. Any idea about where to find them?

Thanks ahead of time for anyone that is able to provide some information regarding these questions.

You won't be sorry for the four strokes. I put four Magnum 30's in mine and do they sound great or what. Like many multi-engine airplanes you need to let the aircraft build up all the speed it can before lifting off. Mine had no problems at all on take off and the landings went alright too with 40% flaps.

This is my second B-17 as my other one has a 117" wingspan and four 40's powering it. I don't fly it much because of the cost of fuel and the fact that it takes 66 oz. of fuel on take off. I installed three Robart retracts for the bird and all three flights went off without a hich. You know the cost of feul thing again.

Bucho,

Just remember to use throttle management on the approach. Use throttle instead of elevator until you are about one to two feet from the runway then use the elevator and start dropping the airspeed down. I installed flapps on mine and over the years have become very confortable using them. With a lot of scale birds they become a necessaty. Which is what the full scale ones did too. After all isn't the reason we fly scale is to experience what it is like to fly the bird?

Sincerely yours,
Les

I picked one of these up recently. Not quite finished. I've got a new canopy set ordered. Can't wait to finish her.
