Stafford B-24 First Flight Report
After lots of waiting for the right conditions for a test flight, today was the day for the test flight of my Jack Stafford B-24.
final weight came out to 13-3/4# dry. The airplane flies beautiful. The maiden flight was pretty much uneventful. Needed about 3 clicks of right aileron trim and three clicks of down elevator. Flies and handles great. The O.S. .25FX engines are plenty for this bird. Most of the flight was done at less than half throttle, using Graupner 8 x 6 three blade props. I had about a 3-5mph tail wind, but elected to take off with the wind anyway. Taking off into the wind from our runway doesn't leave many options should a crisis occur during take off and procedure turn. Landed with the wind also, which probably accounted for the high landing speed, coupled with the fact that my first landings are usually hotter than normal. This is a super flying plane, like most of the others who have them have already attested. Inflight pic to follow.

Did you go with muffler pressure on your fuel tanks?......................
I'm using muffler pressure on all engines. I have the fuel tanks installed in the outboard nacelles, and the tanks for the inboard engines are in the fuselage behine the cockpit. Fuel lines are fed through the wing to the engines.

Congrats on your first flight Rryman. Hattend mentioned a Lancaster. I built a 90in Lancaster from plans and it used 4 OS .25 FX's. Now I am thinking of doing a C-130.
Nothing better than the sound of four engines on an aircraft. It does not take long to draw a crowd, thats for sure.
Craig.

Thanks guys for the compliments. I would like to thank everyone who helped me on this bird along the way, including the guys at Jack Stafford Models. I see so many posts on here where people can't even get to talk to someone at the "factory" or get someone to answer the phone, but when I called JSM one day, the person I wanted to talk to wasn't there, but I was given his cell phone number! Sure enough, I got my question answered on the spot. I also got help from other builders/flyers of the JSM B-24. Thanks to all.
Someone asked about posting the videos. I have neither the equipment or the know how to upload videos. Our club webmaster is currently working on a new website and maybe in the future we can have the videos uploaded to it.
Thanks again,
Randy

3rd & 4th flight report: Today was awesome for flying;negligible wind, and today I tried out the flaps. I put them down on the downwind leg so I could see what reaction the plane would have, and it pitched up slightly, and began slowing down, and a little down elevator brought the nose back down. I put them up and continued flying. When I set up to land, I put the flaps to full down (as full down as I made them operate) when I was completing my turn for final. Continued to point the nose toward the runway, crossed the threshold and at about 3' off the ground, let the nose come up slightly and slowed to landing. Beautiful! The plane slows up real nicely and remains very stable even at low speed. Two very nice landings today. My son also got some awesome video of it from take off to landing. Can't wait to see it again.
