ASM/Global Comet DH88 Out of the Box
My plane came in today. I'm pretty happy with it for the most part. The fuse, despite being plastic and with minimal internal pieces, feels really solid. Not the most impressive finish job but I'm sure it will turn out to be a great flying airplane!

TCB, thanks for posting these pics. I have wanted to see what the kit looked like inside but have been shy to ask the guys at the local Hobby People to take one down and open it up becuase they leave them double boxed so the paying customer gets a "non man-handled" airplane.

In Tim's fifth picture (bottom left), if you enlarge it sufficiently you can see the weave of the cloth in it.

This is an ASM kit and it came from Global/Hobby People.
The nacelles are fiberglass but the fuse it plastic.
It's listed for $349 on the Hobby People web site.
And one more picture. I just couldn't resist "putting it together."

This sure looks like a fabric weave. Note the three arrows. Maybe it's "Noise" in the camera.

Overall I'm a HAPPY MAN! It should be fairly simple to assemble and even more fun to fly.

RE: ASM/Global Comet DH88 Out of the Box
It was a kit years ago, I got the plan and sent it off to have a prototype built, so for me it will be an ARF.
Don't remember the exact dimensions, but it's a "40-46" size plane. I plan on a pair of K&B ringed 61s, but I might go for a pair of FA-82s instead.
Bill.

I'd be impressed with any model that can turn a DH-88 into a "great flying airplane"
The full scale bird was a handful and most models are too. With that wing planform, tip stalls are a major problem, among other things.

I'm surprised at what I would consider the small size of the horizontal stab.
Realizing there is probably no comparison but still something that has made me think. I have MS Flight Sim 2004 and have flown the Comet. You really have to land hot (120+ kts) or you run out of elevator.
This will be an interesting bird to fly.

Hi Tim:
Just recived mine today. I think if set up right she should fly very nicely. Are you going for speed and what have you decided on retracts? I think I may go with a little larger electric motors,,,,,,,, or I have a couple of twin 90 4 cycles laying around ------------ TOO MUCH [sm=drowning.gif]

The DH-88 was a vicious airplane. Having the same sharply tapered wing the model will probably be the same.

RE: ASM/Global Comet DH88 Out of the Box
Hi Bill:
Been checking on the info about the 88, from what I have learned not only with the time I spent with Bill Turner before he died [&o],,, And dealing with the guy's in England that I purchased my 11' model from. They at the time had four of them and loved them. No snapping. Bill loved the plane, his main complaint was landing because he said he could not see the runway, only thru the nacell and the fuse. I am not sure on this smaller model till I fly her. Just my 0.02cents
BRG,,,Dave

RE: ASM/Global Comet DH88 Out of the Box
Dave:
Two possibilities. One is that Bill Turner was such a good pilot that the snapping tendency didn't bother him, always staying fast enough to avoid it, or when he built the replica he put a fair bit of washout in the wings and avoided it that way. Or both.
The model kits may also have a lot of washout. That's how the models of the Aero Commander are tamed - much washout.
Nonetheless, a sharply tapered wing has the ability to bite your back side in a heartbeat.
Bill.

Hi Bill:
Thank you for getting back to me. I agree with the wing,,,,,,,,, I will go very hi and slow her down and see how she stalls,, and good lord it does have a thin wing.
BRG, Dave
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that I am 6'2" and Bill was about 6'5". He took his shoes off and walked out to the wing tip with no flex,,,,, I was impressed
