Mark, do yourself a favor and pick up a couple of Graupner 12x7 props for those OS70s

The difference in pull is amazing. Ask my dad, he'll back me up on this.

Mike,
...for the 310? You would go with the 4-strokers? The Graupners pull better than APC?

Thanks,
Mark

Graupners do pull better. I think they are liquid filled.

So you guys are saying "Use the FS 70's with Graupners" and I will have power in reserve? I just want to make sure that I can throttle back and the plane will not stall or act sluggish... C'mon, talk me into switching!

Ok, I'll put it this way - If I were building this plane from the ground up, there is no doubt in my mind that I would go with 2 OS 70s with Graupner 12x7 props.

The only reason I used OS 45AXs is because that's what Top-Flite wanted me to put in it for the review.

They worked great, but I would have preferred to use OS 70s

And BTW, there was a noticeable difference when using Graupners vs APC even with the 46AXs

Cool!

That's what I wanted to hear!

I will mount them and maiden with them...so if they seem weak, I can always switch back. I will DEFINITELY get the Graupners, too.

Man, I'm dreading the cold next week...we're going to spend a week in beautiful, sunny, Norwich, NY...business trip for a week...woo-hoo!
Do you live close to there? Or better yet, do you know if there's an RC club there? What else do you "Northerners" do in the middle of Winter, in the middle of NY State?

I haven't lived in NY in over 14 years

But it can't ba as bad as it was here last week - we had one day with a "High" of MINUS 7 degrees (Without wind chill factored in)

OUCH!

The AC is on down here, and I just told my wife that I'm chilly at 77 degrees! I am not at all used to the cold.

I think I'll put OS 70's on mine too. I only have one nib surpass three so I need one more. Looks like the only thing that will stick out might be the valve cover. Thought about painting it to match the cowling.RD

Mike:

Swung over here from Seawind to ask your opinion on the TF310. The Seawind is almost done and now looking for the "next candidate" to build. I've read some of the posts here on the 310 and your review as well. Any suggestions and help would be appreciated.

If I do decide to buld the TF310 I think I'd like to add some more power to it, but would like to keep it within the cowls.. What could be used to do that.. The OS 55ax doesnt seem to be much of an improvement.. The specs indicate that its only .1 hp greater than the .46 and a lot more expensive for the small gain, but maybe thats misleading.. I'd appreciate your input to all of it..

Thanks.. Rich

I have a 55AX and I would say that it has a lot more power than the .1 HP would suggest.

Personally, I think that two OS 70's would really fit the bill. You could mount them inverted if you didn't want them sticking out the sides of the cowl - but then of course, they would stick out the bottom

Well, I have to have one. The wife and I have owned and flown a 310Q a while and when this ARF came out its really not a question we get one.

Ive owned a couple of RC twins in this size and wieght and found performance ok to marginal with .60's. Has anyone flown one engine out with a 46-55 size engines??

I was thinking about some bigger 4 strokes?

Mike:

Thanks for your help and info on the engines.. I've bit the bullet and ordered the TF310 with a pair of OS .55 AX engines hoping that they will fit "under the hood" and give me more power than the .46s.. Any thoughts on what props I should use for the .55s?

Rich.

If you are going to run the 55's then you can run the 13 x 7 two blade and get 12000 rpm's or better. Or you can run the 12 x 8 three blade which most of us are running and get about the same rpm reading. I am also using the graupner props from hobby-lobby, they pull better then the masterairscrew props. Good luck with plane, you will love it.

Here is the web site: www.hobby-lobby.com

Hi Walt:

Thanks for the info and your wishes..

I was leaning toward 12 x 8 two blade but if I can go bigger safely I just may do it.. My Seawind uses a 12 x 8 3 blade Graupner so maybe I'll try those on the 310.. I think I'll have to take the wing apart on the 310 for transportation to the field and 3 blades might make that a problem unless I build a cradle for them.. Just some passing thoughts here though.. I think 3 blades would look more scale and realistic as I believe most full size 310s run Hartzel 3 blade CSPs..

How does your 310 fly with the 55s?? Does it seem to have enough power?

Rich..

Hey Rich,
You will not be disappointed in the power of the 55’s. I test flew mine on the 13 x 7 two blades and it was like a rocket, I then when over to the 3 blade. It is still very fast for a twin. I fly mine around half throttle most of the time. I have about 50 flights on mine and I love it. I own a full scale 340 and the 310 on final with full flaps looks like a real plane landing.
Again you will enjoy this plane.

Well, I will sacrifice a bit of cowel but think I will go fourstroke. Plane should be here in the morning so it will be off to the hobbyshop for the engines.

Its amazing how rare the old twin cessnas are getting. I guess parts availability and insurance is killing them. We moved over to Beechcraft but still miss the old bird.

You are correct, if you look at all the new single engine airplanes that are on the market now days and the speed of some of these new planes. I grew up flying a Beech, that is what my Dad owned when I started flying.
I know some of the guys in this thread are using four stokes, you should not have any problems with the plane being under powered. I think most of them are going this route because of the single engine theory. The 55's are more then enough power for this plane.
Have fun building the plane, you will love it.

Walt

Thanks for your info.. The 310 should be here today, and I'm really excited about starting the build. While I'm anxious to fly it, I'm going to do my best to enjoy building it as well as thats really part of the fun for me. This is my first twin, and I dont have a lot of "stick time" anyway, so I'm going to take my time building it and enjoy my other planes as well.

I have the G4 simulator with expansion pack 3 containing the 310 and if the model flies like the sim I think it will be a ton of fun to fly so I'm really looking forward to it all.. I'm glad you have the 55s in yours, that way if I have a problem I'll know who to ask LOL..

Speaking of which, how dod you handle the angled high speed needle adjustment thru the cowl on yours?

Thanks again for your help

Rich

If you are going to run the 55's then look back on page 37 post 921. Their is a tool that Bob Meesh made for these engines to remove the needle valve. Also you will have to get the exhaust extensions he made. They are also on that page.
If you start reading from page 30 up to page 50 their are some great building ideas that you can get from these guys. Need any more help let me know.

Walt:

Thanks so much for your help again..

The 310 got here last night and its been all checked out and inventoried.. It arrived in great shape dispite a some outside box damage.

Since then I've read the posts you mentioned and saw the tool Bob Meesh made for the needle valve as well as the exhaust extensions. Does he make and sell them to others, or did he just make them for himself and friends?
I'd certainly be interested in purchasing those items if he does.. In the review of the 310 that Minnflyer wrote he also mentioned that the person that made the exhaust exensions made aluminum wheels for the 310 that I'd also be interested in purchasing. Is the the same person?

LOL.. Lots of questions.. sorry, and thanks..

Yes he is the one and he does sell them. You should be able to click on the link on one of the post and order it that way. If not click on his name and send him an email.

Yup, same person. And both the extensions and the wheels are "Must Have" items for this plane.

Has anyone competed in a scale competition yet with this plane? I'm just wondering what was done about the color scheme and the photo documentation. That's what I would like to do with it. Thanks,

Ken
