Default Hobby Star 60 X 4!!!

While sneaking out to the field..Kind of on the way to the grocery store for the wife..I spotted a plane so unique that I had to share it. The owner is a really nice guy, but modest about his creation, so naturally I had to drag details out of him. It is FULL AEROBATIC!!! Hover, unlimited vertical, outside loops, UNBELIEVABLY RELIABLE!! and some of the neatest engineering I have seen lately. The tail is a work of art. Here is the story in his own words.

The plane is born of a Hobbico Hobbystar 60. I started the project in Sept. of 2005 and finished in Feb. of 2007. It sports OS 32sx's. I started with TT Pro 36's, but they gave me constant trouble with the idle. However, they put out tremendous power. The TT's put out a total of 22 lbs of thrust. The OS's put out 20 lbs. The OS's run so much better though. The plane weighs 13 lbs. I also used Tetra bubbless fuel tanks. To try and make the plane lighter the nacelle walls are made of 1/8th" balsa sheeted, using gorilla glue, with 1/32nd" ply on both sides. Very strong. An idea given to me by Wes at the RC field. I had Robert, owner of Morris Hobby, Laser cut the nacelles for me out of the template I drew up. The main landing gear is also from Morris Hobby. They are supposed to be for a "Balsa Nova." I needed stronger gear to handle the greater amount of weight from all the engines. It has 2 receivers. One does the left side flight controls and the other does the right side and Rudders. One also does the inboards and the other does the outboards. I went with a twin rudder configuration for the sole purpose of having more rudder authority for engine outs. I found out just the other day, that it will in fact fly with 2 engines dead on the same side. Scary though. The rudders are modeled after the tail of the "Antinov 225" heavy lift Russian plane. The whole tail assembly can come apart too, just in case I break the horizontal. A lesson I learned from it's sister plane that I build in 1999. The nose cone is made of balsa. All the control surfaces are home made as well. The colors on the tail are the flag colors of Ghana. The country in West Africa where I was born. My idea for the windows and door came from the common Beechcraft King Air.

Hope you like the pictures. A really neat conversion.

Any of use who have pondered the twin rudder airplanes, have run across the problem of how to make the rudders work.
Take a look at this neat design, kind of useing a small fake rudder to linkage across to the outer booms and rudders. Simple and effective.

PS..The modeler as I said if somewhat modest about his creation..so I will not mention ....roofus4...Opps..Stupid computer!!!

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the nice words about my plane. It is nice to hear those comments, because, as you all know, some of those late nights working in complete solitude month after month can drive a person crazy. It helps make it all worth it. So thanks again.

Here are some photos of when I was building it. In some of the pictures you can see I was trying to decide whether to make the rudders angle inward or outward. I also used rods to suspend the engines on the wing for the purpose of finding the correct CG before drawing up plans for the nacelles. Still turned up a tad tail heavy. Batteries are in the nose.

Hey Guys,

The false rudder is great idea.

I'll start a .25 size Warthog soon.

I was thinking of putting a small servo back there
for a direct push-push?, but they end up tail heavy,
way too easily!

Great work!

would the tower 60 also be a good plane to use for the base.
