Art Johnson P-38 turbochargers
Turbo chargers needed.
I am currently building an Art Johnson P-38 (94" Ws) and I have come accross a minor problem. The plans do not show any detail for building or making the turbochargers on each boom. I am looking for a source for the turbochargers either fabricated or molded that I can purchase for this P-38. Anyone have suggestions?

RE: Art Johnson P-38 turbochargers
Hi Guys, I have been flying mine since 2004. First with .90's now with Moki 1.35's.....APC 15-10's at 9500 rpms. Dose not need flaps. Use Robart RS139 95 degree retract units. Great flying plane even at 26 lbs. Strenthen the rudder post with a carbon fiber post .040 thick and where the rudder connects to the boom area. Rick

I am sure that it rip's with those engines. I am building mine for scale masters so I put fowler flaps into it, and kinda have to hide the motor a little. where specifically do I need to strengthen the rudder, and why.. this is the first I have heard of an issue with the rudder.. please tell.. I prefer to learn from those who have gone before me

Brentp76, depending on how fast you fly it, it will put some side load on the rudders. My Ziroli P-38 flys 130 mph and after 2 flights, it had a loose rudder from side loads. I fixed it as stated above by overlaying a .040 piece of carbon fiber over the rudder post and its still stiff as a board. If you are about to build the rudders and vertical fins, why not put a little strenth in there. Where the boom meets the stab leading edge could use some strenthening. Atleast soak the stringers with thin CA before sheeting the boom. Then sheet the bottom first so you can soak the inside bottom of the sheeting with more thin CA from the top. Pulling out of a fast steep dive really puts a strain on this area. Thats what P-38's do best!! If you plan on inverting your motor,,,mount it on the bench just like you will mount it in the plane, tune it as best you can, and run it for an hour or 2. If it quits just once in 2 hours of running,,,,,,what dose that spell??? I am not a fan of inverting glow motors because of issues with the plug collecting fuel and oil residue between flights. Mounted side ways is way more reliable than inverted. Buy a Twin Sync and learn all about it. Its the only insurance you can buy for your plane. www.rcshowcase.com sells them. Rick

Already have a twin sync. I went with the os 91fsII, my experience with them has been pretty reliable in both upright and inverted configs. Honestly, if I could get the right motor, and could do it again, I would do an gas motor as I HATE GLOW! but I figure I can deal with only one.. And there is no way I am going to fork out the dough for the neccesary batteries for electric.

The Sig canopy was not a good fit, I am making a plug and am planning to have a canopy pulled from it. It will only cost $10 per canopy, and the fit will be perfect.
