One of our prospective pilots has alerted me that all the motels I listed are tight on reservations that weekend. Must be a minor football game. The Big One is the following weekend.
Exit 92 Ankeny (19 miles south) or Exit 124 Story City (13 miles north) have nice hotels, also. Give me a sec....I'll find some names and ph #'s.
Don't let this stop you from coming. There are lots of motels in the area. We'll find you one. Or you can camp on the floor of my shop.

Mark,
It sounds like a fun time, hopefully, we'll attend. Did you get the big, black beast repaired for this event? Hope the weather is good for you like it was for our warbird event.

We gotta do some formation flying with our two B-25's and our two P-61's (mine's a VQ)!
I have been guinea pigging both of them off our field the last couple of weeks. Despite my concerns about the runway and their 2" wheels, they have done well.
We're gonna use a REALLY BIG roller once in the next coupla weeks that should iron out the little cracks and clumps.

Nah........ That kind of front end damage is more like a winter project for me. In the meantime, maybe I can learn to flair! Also (this part is still fantasy), maybe I can talk Darrell at Sierra into building me a set or 2 of Z-61 tri-gear by then. That isn't the first time a main gear has collapsed on me, just the first time it turned me sideways hard enough to break something.
I DO have a big new green Z-61 (Borrowed Time) ready to go, though. It only has G-38's in it, so it won't have the raw power of Big Black Beast. Also, I have the VQ-61, which I finally am comfortable on the engines after some more tune-up and break-in (O.S. 91 2-strokes).

I'm Ch 49, so we're good there.
Earphones sound interesting.
Rich and I have been practicing with Gee-Bees all season...finally got around to a P-38 formation flight last weekend. We found the best thing is for each of us to have a really high quality spotter... preferrably somebody who is as good or better flyer than the pilot. With the 38's (or any twin warbird), you just can't take your eyes off your own plane for long, which makes separation and speed hard to judge.
Remember, this is a very low-pressure event. If you show up and feel uncomfortable flying, whether it be weather or field or flyers or even your own planes, we'll be glad just to check your planes out and see how you built them, changed them, set them up, gossip like old hens, eat BBQ.
My good friend Alain, for years one of the best pilots in our club, left for CA three years ago, joined a club in San Jose. Always into aerobatics, never developed sufficient respect for warbirds or twins....he wrote me a while back, said he was glad to see that P-38 pilots in California fly the same way I do: Bring the plane out to the field, stand on their heads tuning engines for two hours, find something miniscule wrong, pack up and go home.
We'll have a special area designated so those of us whose engines "aren't quite perfect" can tune them.
Look forward to it!
Mark

It gives me great sadness to report the untimely death of our friend and fellow twin enthusiast Jim Mattke.
Those who attended the event last year will no doubt recognize him as the MC by Acclamation and overall Goodwill Ambassador.
I know every body's a prince in the eulogy, but Jim was truly one of those rare guys who made everybody around him feel good just to be around him.
He be sorely missed
I thought perhaps to cancel the event, but no way would Jim want THAT

OK, deep breath:
I received some complaints about the seven motels around Exit 111 being full or wanting 2-night commitments, so I did some wheels-up investigating tonight.
There is one more new motel at Exit 111 (where you leave I-35 to go to the field): Fairfield Inn (515) 232-4000
another 2 miles west of Exit 111 on Hwy 30: Gateway (515) 292-8600
At Exit 113:
Quality Inn (515) 232-9260
Holiday Inn Express (515) 232-2300
At Exit 124 (Story City): cleanest, friendliest town in Iowa!
Comfort Inn: (515) 733-6363
Super-8: (515) 733-5281
Viking Hotel: (515) 733-4306
At Exit 92 (Ankeny):
Heartland Inn: (515) 964-8202
Best Western: (515) 964-1717
Days Inn: (515) 965-1995
Fairfield Inn: (515) 965-8400
Super-8: (515) 964-4503
At Exit 90 (Ankeny):
AmericInn: (515) 964-2004
Holiday Inn Express: (515) 965-2400
Country Inn: (515) 965-2646
Comfort Inn: (515) 963-1100
That's It. That's as far away as I'm willing to send you. If you can't get one there, bring a sleeping bag and we'll put you up on somebody's floor. These are all right on the freeway, but Exit 90 is about 16 miles from the field, even short-cutting in the back way.

RE: Attention All Twin Maniacs !!
Everybody clear on how to get there?
Take I-35 to Exit 111A (Hwy 30 East)
Take Hwy 30 East 1.7 miles to R70 (first paved right, mile marker 153 on Hwy 30, sign says "Cambridge")
Take R70 5.5 miles south to airfield.
Park and Fly!
Call or email me with any questions.
I will keep this thread updated with weather info right up till Saturday 9 AM. Right now, my forecast is "partly cloudy, 74 degrees, south wind at 8 mph."

Good grass-growing weather and access to a 12-ton highway roller has me feeling much better about our runway. Flew some delicate retracts and my suspension-less "iron-wheeled wagon" (Gee-Bee) off it today and was pleased with it. The field on the near and far side of the new runway, of course, is the same-to-slightly-better than last year.
Attached is an action photo of the landing that won me the "Best Flight Into Terrain" Award last year with my 126" CBA-38. Note the nice level wings, true heading and attitude, just not quite the 50 mph landing speed she likes (demands). The difference between the 40 mph headwind and the ground effect tricked me!
All patched up, re-geared, and ready to go. I'll fly it this year for all you blood-thirsty thrill seekers if we get enough of an audience.

Prizes and Weather:
I picked up the prizes today and finally settled on the Grand Prize!
I want something attractive to everyone, and I think this is a doozy.
All registered pilots are eligible for the general drawing, but you must fly a Multi-Engine plane Sept 8th to be eligible for this one!
Weather forecast calls for partly cloudy, 79 degrees, SE wind at 10 mph ! Awesome! That's pretty close to my best hopes of last month.
See ya there!

We Had a Great Time!!
Thanks all who came and all who helped.
Weather was spectacular. We had 12 pilots, most with several awesome planes, probably more than a hundred flights with no real crashes.
We have more than 2,000 still photos, 5 hours of video. I'll get the DVD's out to you as soon as I can get it all sorted and condensed.
Thank you again,
See ya next year!

Jimmy and I were all smiles after a successful "formation flight" of our P-61's.
Don't see that often!
The 2-strokes might make mine a little faster wide open, but he easily won the crowd by doing multiple low-altitude rolls.
Way to go, Jimmy!

For all of you who were un-able to attend, this really was alot of fun. The weather was great, the flying site is excellent. Mark and all of his yellow shirts did a wonderful job making us all feel at home and giving everyone anything we needed. The atmosphere was very relaxed, and everyone was able to fly and do so as often as they wanted.
The food was good, thanks for that too.
I was able to meet in person the "world famous" Robby. He helped me learn a few new things and manuvers and we tried flying our twinstars in formation as well. Robby was never sure what I would do next, so I kind of made it a challenge for him. (I wasn't even sure what I would do next either). By the third formation flight we did much better.
I am definitely planning on attending next year as well. Hopefully I can bring my duelist as well.
Tim

The weather was FANTASTIK !!!!!
The facilities were great....
The planes were some of the best around...
The pilots were just as stellar...
Giant scale warbirds to smaller sport planes were in attendance..
Fun was had by all..
Met and enjoyed many new faces as well as some familar ones..
Sandy again did an outstanding lay out for the food.. Major kudos to Sandy for this..
Only three minor mishaps, one by yours truely...
Tim had his first ever experience flying formation and did an outstanding job of doing it..
Wayyy to go Tim...
Mark did his own rendition of 'Children of the Corn'...[>:]
Frank flying his A26 gave new meaning to 'Fly it like you stole it'....
There was hardly any time that a plane was not in the air..
And when the B-17's & the B-29 went, they all went up.. A grand sight to see..
Bomb drops and parachutes on about every flight from them..
And then there is Denny,, the poor camara man.. Seems everyone was aiming for him..
To Mark, Denny, Keith and all the yellow shirts,, a major Thank you...
