Finally back to work on her. Time to finish that cockpit, fix some weathering and distressing details (like the exhaust trail from the turbochargers), work on those wing fairings, freshen up the exterior from a season of flying, check the batteries, go over the engines, and clean & oil the gear.
I'm also considering taking on a new identity for her. It would give her a little nose art and be a simple conversion, with the biggest change going to the tail. I kinda like the red tail look. Any thoughts?

I got my tin foil and Rust-o-lium metal finish paint out and went back to work 'beating up' on her. I added more paint chipping to many areas including the leading edges of the wings behind the propeller ark, the top of the wings where the pilots and other walked, the front of the gear doors, the cowls, the tail planes, the radiator housings, and turbo supercharger intakes.
I also noticed a small tube facing into the wind on each side of the cowls. I looked it up and it apparently moved air back over the spark plugs to cool them. Don't know how I missed them. I'll be adding them as well.
I also added the polished ovals to the inboard facing side of each cowl. I made these out of Flight Metal. These offered the pilot a visual on the nose gear.

Got the first shipment of the kit today................................WOW!!!! Nice job Gary.
Really nice pile of wood in there, all cut and ready to go, each section wrapped separatly and marked for location. And templates to boot. I'm impressed!!!!!!
On the side intakes. What if the flange was ummm, creased where it meets up against the scoop. That way it could be folded under the scoop, instead of being on the outside. Then it could be glued to the boom and would be a lot less visible.
If you're looking at vac forming them, the sprue part of the sheet would become the flange. You would just trim the sides of the scoops wide on the sides, fold em at the crease and wha-la! you have hidden mounts.
Well for anyone interested, I spoke to John at NitroPlanes, according to them they are not sure when the next shipment of 38's is due yet. He did promise to let me know as soon as he finds out. [&:]

No,no joy Gary. I spoke to John at NP last week, still no guess at when they will hit.[]
Knowing my luck thou, they will show next week. Right after I leave for a trip to Dallas for two months. LOL!!!
Anyhow, nice job on the exhausts.
And since I'm already typing, something that came up and I figure with all the documentation you have you may have and answer.
On the gondola, rear, left side if I remember correctly, there is a louvered panel/hatch. And it appears it may have been an in field mod. Any idea what it may have been for?

On the louvers, I saw this come up on another thread and pored over all my stuff and can't find a thing on it. I'm still researching it. It does not seem to be a factory part as you know. My best guess is that it was added to provide venting to the crew pod in those hot Pacific Theater conditions. Radios were back there as well, under all that Plexiglas.
I'm working on those little cooling inlets for the spark plugs as well. Never noticed them before. Funny what all you can miss in photos.
Thanks for the compliment on the exhaust. It is fun to do, and is so much better than that, stand way back, stand off look Nitro gives you.

Finished the radio gear complete with some paint fading and wear. I also made a yoke with the wheel used on the J and later models, and installed the instrument panel. I want to build a throttle tower for has left hand, then I will screw the canopy back on and call it done for now. My P-47 awaits my attention.

Very nice indeed Gary!!!!!
You know if you are going so scale, you need the correct style spinners on there.

Hope they hit the US market soon for the rest of you guys. In the meantime, I'll represent for us.

RE: Nitroplanes 90
Sigh....... well ANOTHER winter time project down the tubes. Been waiting for MONTHS now for Nitroplanes to get the P-38's back in stock and purchase your upgrade kit but by the time they have them in again (if they get them in again) I'm sure we'll have flowers in the garden instead of the 3 feet of snow!!!!! AAAAARRRRRGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, I'm frustrated.

RE: Nitroplanes 90
Yeah, I know it's a worthwhile project but Nitroplanes inability to keep things in stock drives me crazy at times. I should have just oredered the plane during last flying season while they still had some. And I should have known better because the same thing happened to me LAST year during THAT winter time building season. I ordered their Mosquito that was listed 'in stock' and was notified 4 days later that they didn't have any. It was almost 6 months later before they got any more in and by that time I had spent the funds on something else!!!

OK now that I am getting the hang of this posting thing here goes. I am working on the crew pod bottom and it is a process but it is certainly easier and quicker than the old way of using bulkheads and sheeting..I used the gap filling foam and only had to wait about 8 hours before starting the carving..I used a serated bread knife for the carving and it worked very well. When applying the foam I found that the slower the foam exits the application tube the better that way you get less voids and air bubbles.

RE: Nitroplanes 90
I decided to use the remainder of the expanding foam to shape the bottom of the cowls.I thought about using the pink insulating foam board but it just didn't fit the curvature of the cowls, so expanding foam it is

For those of you waiting for these to be available again, I posted another inquirey in the Nitro Planes support thread and got this responce:
"Yes they are coming for sure. The new ones we have will be slightly different than the one listed on the website. The original factory that made the p38 went out of business. I'll update you once we have it.
John
Nitro Planes
That would explain the delay. Now we also have to be in suspense about what changes they may have made. Hopefully they addressed that stupid two piece wing, but retained the basic soundness of the airframe.
