10ft spad with twin ryobi's (Have a listen)
G'day Folks.
Always wanted a big twin so this was the cheapest way to do it and came up with a 10ft spad with twin 31cc ryobi's spinning 18x8 mas props.
Total cost of air frame was $120
Have a listen I like the sound of a twin this my first one by the way.

G'day Paul
It only has had one flight and flew pretty good with some small issues that have been fixed as how the engines are set I am not sure what you mean.
I will fly it again over the next couple of days.
Cheers Adrian.

On the engines, he may mean do you have them set up with thrust away from each other slightly, or maybe both with some right thrust, etc.

Yes what did you do with Thrust. Is it all set at 0?
I am doing one like what you are. but it is not going to be a 10' wing. It will be a little smaller. I will have 2 homelite 25cc on it. It is just fun. If it works or not. but it would be nice if it works good lol

Ok I am with you now well it has 0 thrust at moment I think I need to fly a bit more and take it from there. It would be easy to change thrust angles as the standoffs are just threaded rods.

I like it!!
It's a plane that you can fly anytime, anywhere &
not worry so much if you ding it.
That is my kind of plane, but I just haven't
built one that big yet!
Great job! Keep us posted on how it flies...

Here is a pic of TWIRP, ( TWIn Rudder Plastic), 6ft spad twin. Flying surfaces coroplast with yard stick main spar, downspout fuse and engine nascelles. Two TT Pro 46's for power.
I've put it on a diet for it's fifth season. Changed to single fin/rudder, moved rudder servo forward, shortened fuse and shortened engine nascelles. Preliminary flights do not show much change in flight behaviour.

Hello adrian222
Your plane is gorgeous. In case you have little or no experience/knowledge flying model twin engine planes, I urge you to read more about what is suggested with regard to mounting the engines with "out" thrust (I use 4 degrees on each engine, others use a greater angle), and what is suggested if an engine quits. When an engine quits the plane may snap roll into the dead engine. On some planes this is violent, others may be easier to control. Please read the experience of others. I have had only one twin; 48"WS, two .28 Magnum engines so my advice carries little weight. The safest thing to do when an engine quits is to put both engines at idle (a single throttle is recommended) regain control, then throttle up gently and land as soon as possible. I crashed every time I turned into the dead engine and I could not always decide which engine was stopped.

Thanks for the advice I had a another flight today and found that the plane wanted to turn right all the time I think that I might have to play around with engine thrust as there is allot of torque in those engines with their flywheels. Not quite sure which way to attack yet will have to experiment .

What you see is a optical illusion there is a name for it just quite can't remember at the moment and the camera makes it worse.

I think I found the problem what is happening is the glue joint between the the top of the spar on the right wing and covering let go and the wing is flexing and the repair is not that hard being a spad.
These things happen when you design and build new planes it will be in air soon again.

Very cool plane Adrian!! I am a big fan of SPAD's as well. I have a few and they are a blast to try new things with. If you trash it you are not really out that much money!

Simple Plastic Aircraft Design.
Go to spadtothebone.com to read all about it and get lots of plans.
The original concept was to use 'coroplast' plastic sheet and plastic rainwater downsput. They usually turn out a bit heavy but are; quick to make, inexpensive, fly well and as tough as old boots.
That is why I made my TWIRP twin this way.
Made it in a couple of days, flown it for several years, and it's still going strong

Frugalfyer beat me to it but here is an example of one of mine. It is called a SPA3DT Best 3D trainer ever and a real blast to fly. The plans are one www.SPADtothebone.com
