I saw the article for this plane in the February issue of Flying Models and really like the looks of it. When I saw that a laser cut short kit was available, deciding that I need yet another project, I went ahead and ordered the plans from Flying Models plan service (plan number CD359) and a short kit from [email protected] . Getting the plans has been an adventure due to the dreaded shipping monster that ate not one, but two sets of plans. The third (and I hope final set) should arrive this week along with the short kit. This will be a long build for me, but if anyone else is building one, join in. As I build, I will post pictures and comments.

Hi, Shawn. I will be following along with you on this build..it's a very cool model. Looks great in the displayed colors IMHO. BTW: I ordered some plans from Flying Models some time ago (within the year) and the service was TERRIBLE [:@]. My plans arrived in nasty condition and went into the "round file". Contacted the Publisher and Editor and...guess what..plans arrived again in terrible shape...had been rolled wet in addition to shipping woes. Flying Models did offer me a free plan for the troubles but...duh... I was going to spring for the Twin Lizzie plan !! Nevertheless, good luck on your build and keep us posted as to your progress.

Got home from work today and Mr. Mailman had left me a gift! A nice box of laser cut parts that will one day be a Twin Lizzie. Everything looks great. Now, if I could only get a good set of plans delivered........

Hey Guys,

Just so everyone knows, there are two different size twin engine Lizzie's out there. There is a 53 inch wingspan version and an 83 inch version. From what I understand, they should both build the same. I am building the 83 inch version. I called about the plans again today and they have promised that I will have them next week. Time will tell. Here is a picture of the 53 inch version in flight.

Let's just hope when you finally GET those plans you can actually use them...don't ask me about the Flying Models Mr. Mulligan plan [:@], or the Eindecker plan [:@] or the Bonanza V-Tail plan...[:@] that are in my shop. Everyone on them is wrinkled BIG TIME from being put in the mailing tube wet; I will HAVE to iron each plan entirely in order to use it. Still....perhaps you'll get lucky....

We have plans! I will now start the build. The first step will be to layout the different parts that were laser cut and check to make sure that I have everything I need. Will put togeter a materials sheet for the different stock needed to complete the plane. More to follow.............

That's Milton Dickey's plane. He goes by Dickeybird here at RCU. Hangs out in the 1/2A forum from time to time. Great builder and nice fellow. Here's a pic of his plane that I took at the SMALL Fly-In in Little Rock back in June.

Now that I have plans, I laid out all the laser cut parts from the short kit. The wife walked in, shook her head and asked if I wanted Ginger to help. The wife has a sense of humor. Ginger is our 83 pound golden retriever. I'm sure she would just love to help. Anyway, it looks like everything is there. I checked over the parts and they are nicely cut from excellent balsa stock (thank you Ed). Since it's going to be raining in the morning, and I can't get to all those outside chores, I guess I'll just start figuring out what size and how much stock and sheeting I will need to order. I already checked on the price of the engine nacelle cowlings, twenty eight dollors each. Will slowly work through the plans and will make up a document with everything that is needed to complete the kit. I am really looking forward to starting on this project, even thought I know it will be a long one.

Just a note to anyone out there thinking of building the Lizzie. Electrifly has disontiuned the production of the 35-48-850 motor. From plugging in the numbers, the 35-36-1200 will work, more thrust, but less speed. On the Tower Hobbie website, they listed the 42-40-1000 as a possible replacement. Might check some of the other brands to see what they come up with.

I am still compiling what balsa and spruce/basswood will be needed. It amazes me how quick things add up. I hope to have the list posted by next week, but this is a busy week at work. My goal is to place the wood order by next Friday so that I can start the build in about two weeks. Hope someone else is thinking of this plane as a good winter build.

The twin rudders use a bellcrank assembly in conjunction with a boom. It really is a neat little set-up. Check out the PDF file for a look at the tail section. I would also suggest finding the Feburary 09 of Flying Models issue for the build article.

Sorry for the long delay, but I have been a bit under the weather. Should have some information posted by the weekend. I am in the process of picking up some of the material and hope to start by next week with the build.

I am starting with the fuslage. From what I can tell, here is what you will need to start with.

12 pcs. balsa 3/16 x 3/16 x 36
1 pcs spruce 3/16 x 3/8 x 36
1 pcs balsa 1/2 tri-stock
1 pcs hard balsa 3/16 x 3/8 x 36
1 pcs balsa 1/8 x 3 x 36
2 pcs balsa 3/16 x 3 x 36
1 pcs hardwood 1/2 x 1 -5/8 x 12

Depending on how you plan on forming the nose and tail cones, you would need the following balsa blocks if carving them:

1 pcs balsa 5 x 6 x 6 (nose)
1 pcs balsa 3 x 4 x 4 (tail cone)

You will also need one piece os soft balsa for the stab fairing:

1 pcs balsa 1 x 4 x 8


I am looking into using a 3-D printer to make the nose and tail cones. If it works, I will just lay up some fiberglass on the inside to give some added strength.

Plan on starting on Saturday or Sunday. Pictures to follow.

You are going to love this airplane! I have about 50 flights on the one in the article now and I enjoy it more everytime I take it out.
I have my timer set on the transmitter for 5 minutes and that seems to work fine with the 2100 mah batteries. Haven't made the jump to 3300 mah yet but would love to...theres plenty of room. I think I could thermal my lizzie if the lift was really good

Here are some pictures of my laser cut kit Twin Lizzy finished by a gentleman in OR. He put 2 -OS 46 AX's on it and says it flies great. I would love to see some more of my kits out there, send me pictures! This should get you motivated again Shawn.

Just received the plans from Carstens. Seems their customer service has improved. Got mine in about 3 weeks and they were perfect. Now on to a sad note, if you guys dont know, Ed from Lazer Short Kits passed away about 3 months ago and the business is no longer. I faxed an order days ago and not hearing anything I called and got the news. SO !! looks like I'm gonna have to dust off the ole band saw.

Unless Shawn wants to get rid of his !!!!!!!!!!!!!
