Default My Take On The New Futaba 7CAP

I really didn’t do that much research on this radio. There were a couple of posts here. I read what I could at Futaba’s web site. I was close to buying a 9C transmitter or system, and I was told by some people who had looked at this radio that it had very similar programming to the 9C. I decided to take a close look myself and bought one.

I got the system with 4-3004 standard servo’s…..it came in the usual Futaba box. The only difference in the flight pack…..from my 6DA system is they bumped the amps up on the wall charger…..from 50\50…..to 70\100…..100 for the RX battery.

I’ve never owned a full blown computer radio before………I checked into it a few times but it seem pretty complicated, so I stayed with non computer systems.
The instruction book is pretty good…..their are some gaps in some areas……..you get the basics. Which for most people will be enough. Doing the custom mixes will take the newbie a little practice to understand how to do this. You just have to watch what your doing…..and don’t get your mixes mixed up with each other.
It really is not that hard once you understand how the programming works.
I read the manual once……then referenced back to it as needed. I have a multi-channel sailplane with the gear installed on the same channel. So I decided to do my first programming using it.
After playing around with the radio for less than two hours I was able to:
1. Setup the count down, count up timer on switch A.
2. Setup the flaperons.
3. Setup a prescribed amount of up elevator\down flaps on another switch for launching.
4. Fine tune all the servos and set the proper direction…..rev\nor.

So in two hours I was able to completely setup this glider ready for launch.
Someone who owns a 9C probably could of done it in 20 minutes or less.

By comparing the 7C against the 9C I would say the 7C has about 80 percent of the functionality of the 9C and of course two less channels.
And not to forget……the 7C is 150 dollars less to purchase.
At this point I don’t see me using more than 7 Channels. The only time I double up the servos is on ailerons\flaperons so 7 channels works fine for me. That seems to be the main drawback to having 7 channels over 9. If you are doubling up more servos you may need to look at more channels.

The highlights of this system as I see it are.

1. Easy to program.
2. Has a clever up\down timer which you can setup on your throttle stick to start running as you throttle up the motor or you can assign it to any switch on the TX. It also has a total time ON for the TX.
3. Low battery warning and other nice safety features.
4. You can easily copy model settings for backup.
5. The overall feel of the transmitter feels solid. Nice feel on the sticks as well.

I would highly recommend this system to anyone who is looking for advanced functionality in there TX. The ability to fine tune your servos and do custom mixes is very nice. I think this will be a very popular system for Futaba; it fills a niche of people who don’t need 9 channels. Yet gives us many of the high end features to program there flight systems.
All in a very solid easy to program package.

Tower Hobbies is selling this package for 250 dollars less 15 right now. For this price range I don’t think your going to find a better deal.
Futaba did a wise thing by combining the programming functionality of the 9C into the 7C. I see now why everyone raves about the 9C…….this kind of programming is quite amazing.

Just my 7C-ents worth.

Futaba's site has a pretty good comparison.

i would agree that the 7 caX is a great radio. it is my first rc plane radio and i also own a jr rc truck radio. the programming is really intuitive. also the package i got came with digital servos and all the trimmings, same as most others. ended up getting it in $240 range at towerhobbies after promotions, shipped free to my door.

i can't comment on the 9c, but after using my 7c i have no doubt that the 9c must be awesome.
