On this day january 26 1961,my dad aged 40 years old was killed in a mineing accident when the coal face roof caved in at brodsworth main colliery doncaster south yorkshire,it left my mum with five children to bring up my two sisters aged 14 and twelve,my two brothers aged 7 and 6 months and me age 5.my mum did a great job god bless her.
The hurt never goes away,i also write this because to also remember the soldier my dad had been, dad was brought up in a orphanage and at the age of 15 decided to join the army,he was a serving soldier in palastine when the war broke out in 1939,he was with the sherwood foresters (infantry)he was sent to north africa. He was wounded in the battle for el al amein with shrapnel but recovered and went back to the fight, after this he landed at the Anzio beach head with our american allies ,after the breakout he was involved in some of the heaviest fighting of the war on the gustav line,he thought all the way through italy until they reached austria, where,he stayed until late 1945 when he was de mobbed,he married my mum in 1946,settled down to civvy life but in the 50s was once again called upon for active service in Korea(the forgotten war)after this conflict dad was back in civvy street working as a blacksmith until he went to work inthe local mine because the wages where better ,and the rest is you know.god bless him.Abide with me was the hymn mum was allways singing when we where growing up, ithink it kept her faith going.Thank you for reading my post
