I think the true question, is which is wider or deeper in the engine compartment.
I woudl say that the extra is wider both will have to be cut to allow the cylinder to stick out into the air stream.

Width is the same, distance to front of cowl is within 1/8" of being the same, it's the same airplane with different wings.

This might be a good time to put this info out.

In the shipment of airplanes that is about to be delivered here, everything is sold except for 2 dozen of the Extra 300 Special 28% and 5 all white Extra 35%.

That is as of 3/27/04.

If anybody wants something else from Wild Hare you can pre-order from the next batch which is due in late May. We already have a stack of orders for May/June, early oders get early shipment.

That batch will have Extra 35% in the new scheme, Giles G202 35% in a new nifty color scheme, Edge 540T 28%, and Extra 300LX 28%.

It must be nice to go over and pick up your equipment.
I would get one of those 35% extra's but I don't have an engine for it.
I am going to work on getting my Edge back into flying shape for the contest this saturday 4/3

Because I am from North Atlanta I say it must be nice living in GA ! One thing about being so close to WildHare though; I have to resist calling Tom up and asking if I can come over to see if he has any "new" goodies..............

(Back to the original question regarding the Extra Special. vs. Edge engine compatibility.)

Tom, What is the difference in the CG locations between the two wing types?

Is the additional wing loading of the Extra's noticeable?

I love that R-W-B Extra Special Scheme. ...

Tom and his wife were kind enough to let me intrude today (I am in Dallas on business) to take a look at the Extra 300 Special (I have one on order). It does look pretty sharp...I was surprised at how much more of a presence the airplane has compared to a GP PW Extra or similar.

Should be fun.

On the Extra the CG is a little farther back so a DA 50 balances perfectly with the batteries on the Rx tray. On the Edge you need the batteries in front and may need a few ounces of ballast depending on your style.

What additional wing loading? The Extra wing area is 1365, the edge is about 1360. THat original calculation of 1390 was a little off.

My intention is to get an "all white" and do it similar to my OMP Edge 540 in the pictures in my gallery.

Thanks Tom,

Where is the CG at on the Extra? If the Edge is ~5", I assume the Extra is further back.

The 28% manual does not have the Extra CG specifications.

Yes it does on page 23 in boldface type. The Extra balances 2 1/2" to 3" behind the front corner of the wing tip. FYI the link still says Edge 540T manual, but it's been updated to reflect the Extras as well.
