Has anyone put a canister muffler in a 540. I would like to have one and I would probably use the DA50 but due to sound level restrictions I would have to have a can in it. Any experience out there?
Or anyone have a 300 with a canister exhaust?
thanks

Interesting. I recently have been thinking about going to pipes to get some extra oomph out of the 'ol 50... honestly I would have some already if I wasn't perpetually in a state of upgrade... all my $$$ are going towards my 40%er. I also JUST bought a slimline to replace my stock DA muffler, so I'm not too hot on tossing a $100 muffler in favore of spending more cash.
Still an idea for the future tho... after I go all carbon/fiberglass and all of the other little mods I have in mind to turn my edge into the ultimate flying machine.

Take a look at the engine install pics at www.edge540t.com to see the cowl butchery nessasary to fit the stock DA muffler.

Why did you purchase a Slimline muffler for your DA 50R over the standard?
What are the advantages in your opinion..?

The only test I have done is with the MVVS 58. I went from 6800 rpm on a slimline for a DA-50 to a header and can (a very good one from MTW, not a hand made cobby one) and lost about 200 rpm. That is not scientific, I only got one test, there may be more power there if I adjust the carb. Also the reeds in the engine were on the way out so that may account for power loss. MOre testing to follow when I get the reed block fixed.

Reason I went to the slimline? Mostly the appearance. I hated the giant smokestack sticking out of the bottom of my cowl. Its a blemish on the otherwise excellant looks of my plane. I also needed some nose weight and the slimline helped in that regard. Its also a bit quieter than the "noise deflector" DA stock muffler.
Thats the story, pretty much I wanted to waste some $$$ replacing a perfectly good muffler

Any idea what the sound level is with the Slimline muffler? and with what prop of course. DA told me about the best to expect would be 101db with their stock muffler and a good prop. They did say it would be a little quieter with the Slimline muffler but they didn't say how much.

DA-50 with Slimline Pitts muffler, Menz 24x8, on a CA Extra 300L 27%.
98dB at 10 ft ("A" scale, slow weighting)
Great combo, quieter than a lot of the 40-60 size planes at our field.

FWIW:
Run your engine and adjust High speed needle for max rpm (with NO exhaust setup)
Do this in short bursts and do not over heat the engine .
Now add the muffler of your choice.
re set high speed as needed - do not run long periods - keep engine cool.
OK --which in cowl setup actually exceeded open stack rpm?
anybody ?
Do same test with the best quiet can muffler on a very short header .
Check rpm
any gain?
In honest tests - engines kept cool - we have never seen any gain with an in cowl muffler
Never.
some losses are awful.
some minimal
Using a very short header and a good can - again NO gain but very quiet operation
Tuned setups?
they add power - NONE of the others will.
Check with DA if you doubt this .
Most tests on mufflers do not allow for cool down and proper needle re setting
extended WOTrunning, progressively lowers next tests.
Ask DA if you doubt this.
The stock DA can is very good at minimal losses but is noisy
