I would like to run a haigh-style tailwheel on a 28% Extra, Has anyone tried this or is it not worth it. I keep breaking the solder joint on the stock one. (bumpy grass field)
Thanks

I have used a haigh style tailwheel on our 28% planes and it works fine.
I have some in stock for $15 apiece. They are a pretty nice tailwheel, it's the one we use on the Ultimate, made in China.
A little heavier than the leaf-spring one but definitely stronger.

I've been using the Haigh type tail wheels since I broke the first tailwheel on my 28% Extra and it works just fine. I'm also using one on my Giles and will probably be putting one on the Ultimate. They work well on my Ultimate Pitts, so why not?
To work best they require that a hardwood block be glued inside the back of the fuse to support the bend in the rod, but other than that the installation is quite easy. You will have to remove and replace some covering to access the tail.

My Extra Special came out somewhat tail heavy with a Garphtech Tail wheel... the haigh will be even worse. Use a graphtech so you can keep your batteries as far away from the ignition as possible.

Guys, I would like to invite you to take a look at my new Titanium series tailwheels.
