Yeah I had a transmitter itself go bad, a 9C. Thats why I switched to JR.
Back on subject - Just try your TX first and see what happens. True you could use a Y, but for true redundancy its nice to have each half plugged into its own channel. Some go as far as splitting the channels between two RX's, but at this size I dont think its needed.
Also some nifty mixing can be had when the elevators have their own channels.
Since you are all out 3D (kinda like me too...lol) get the largest servo arms possible, the most throw, and possibly a ton of expo too...lol.
Your setup sounds good thus far! When you mount your engine, take Tom's advice. Its the hardest part of a build in my opinion, and goes super easy if you stand the fuse up verticaly. Mount the engine, put the cowl one, get it all lined up then drill your mounting holes.
Make sure your throttle servo is FAST and your linkage has minimal slop. I try to keep my throttle servo close enough for fast response (needed for 3D) yet far enough away to prevent RX interference from the engine/ignition.
I am a terrible pilot when it comes to breaking in an airplane correctly. I try to hover all my planes on their first flight. Its my test, if it wont hover, I get rid of it. All of my wild hares have passed this with flying colors.
