Default Ultimate + Evo 58

Well finally finished the Ultimate with Evo58, 18.2 lbs according to the digital scale. Batteries had to be located in a new hatch underneath the pilot. 2 Fromeco 2400 packs, If you use Nicads or Nimh then that is probably to far back. Added new landing gear at 1 1/2" taller and "real 6061" to carry the bigger prop.
Pull pull so I guess that could have gone in the tail but more hassle me thinks!!

How do you think it will do on that weight Tom?

I think it will be great. That's not a bad weight at all.

Please post results here.

Default RE: Ultimate + Evo 58

btw I made new strut fixtures using a sandwich of Aircraft ply and woven carbon fiber which fits just like the old ones and I dont think that will break.
I refrained from adding epoxy in goops and tristocked the firewall.
6 x 5945s and one 5955tg.
2 reciever packs Lion, 2 switches, 2 Smartfly regulators ( adjustable )
1 Lion 2400 regulated to 5.4v for ignition.
Tru Turn Ulty spinner.
Throttle and choke in the tray either side of the rudder servo.
Beefed up the wing bolt area and as the blind nuts fell out 1 changed them to 1/4 20
Gorilla Glue on the hinges and tail section to fill the gaps.
Hatch added to the area just behind the firewall as the space was too tempting and allows easy access to the fuel tank etc.
Wheel pants had to have a bit of dremel work on them as they are imo 2 small. Max you can fit is 3 1/2 "
There was lots of play in the horizontal, vertical stab to fuse area hence the gorilla glue to fill the voids.

Well it flies just fine, lands so smooth I couldnt believe it!! Evo 58 seems like an outstanding motor pulls along a 24/10 without breaking a sweat...still running it rich for the first few.
Ailerons are super sensitive
Only thing I dont like is the cowl is cracking after 3 flights.
Tom, I had my doubts after listening to some of these Lite freaks but this is a good combo for this style plane IMO.
Did you have any problems with the EVO running backwards? It happened to me 3 times.

Yeah, I've had mine start backwards a few times. That's really unavoidable with the auto-advance style ignition and reed valve.

Two requests:

1) Can you take some pictures of your rudder servo and battery set up?

2) How does the spiral wrap hold up to the heat of the engine? I've been wanting to get some but not sure if it will melt or not.

Phamil1 and I fired up my Evo 58 tonight. It's going to be SWWEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!

Ill try and get the camera in there.
The spiral wrap doesnt touch anything and seems okay as its mainly to stop chafe from the cowl.
I would add extra screws to the cowl and add some glass to the existing screw holes as the cowl is way thin in places. Mine started to enlarge the holes after 3rd flight.
Also watch out how you position the prop and flip the moter as it runs backwards easily. follow thru on the swing!!

Yeah, we found that out last night. We got it down to idle and it started moving backwards. I usually just pick up some rubber grommets from the hardward store and enlarge my holes so they will fit. If the material seems thin, I add a small piece of fiberglass cloth and just use thin CA to attach it.

As far as balance goes if you use heavier batteries then you may want to try them on the tray. The area I made a hatch only has a 1/4" balsa cross member so there is not a lot to do other than come up with a cover and some white Ultracote.
Watch out for loose screws etc as a rear carb really cuases a problem if it attemps to digest one. Somewhere on this site I posted a picture of a ZDZ that did that ...there was not a lot left of the motor.

Nice. I use Fromeco Relions like you do so it would be the same for me. It's a good thing you caught that on your rudder tiller, could've been bad.

this engine issue is very confusing, the evo seems to be too new and i am concerned about reliability and serv. i have a buddy with a DA 50 and the thing runs terrible, almost dies under inverted G's, he is allways haveing trouble with the DA 50. he spends more time with the cowl off trying to get it running then he does flying it. the 27% ultimate is only 15 lbs and i was thinking about less motor not more. I have a Fuji 50 on my christian Eagle that wieghs 20lbs and it flies very well. the Fuji is not a popular motor but mine has yet to stop running in the air and will swing a 20/10 at 7200 rpm.(bme laminated prop) I was thinking about running the 3w 42 on my ultimate but you guys seem to be going the other way. I am also confused by the conflicting reports on these motors. I am guessing it has somthing to do with knowlage and expierence with everthing involved.

I would like to here from fliers that have this plane in the air and what equipment you have on it.
how does it fly? I am not a 3D flier, i like aerobatics, some hovering and if i can learn to harrior that would be cool.

Seems your buddy should quit tinkering with his DA and send it in....

The Evolution is not new it has been running for some time as it is an Mvvs 58 rebadged. I think the DA 50 has been around long enough and has sold in sufficient quantities to speak for itself. Your buddie has either got a bad one or its not setup right.
I do not think that you can compare he Fuji with a DA or Evolution for power.
These forum also can be quite misleading as one person has a problem everyone reads it and all start jumping up and down.
In reality most fliers do not post here so you are only hearing from a few.
My Evolution is quite happy with a 24/10 prop and has been one of the easiest engines to deal with that I have owned.
I dont think the 3w is going to be enough for performance.
15lbs is a stretch imo must be very good scales!!
Why dont you call Tom and ask him?

I have to laugh we have 3 or 4 of these DA's in our club and they all ran fine right out of the box. After break in I leaned mine out just a touch. If you lean it out to much it will stall when you punch it especially when cold I idle mine down to where she wont roll out on the field when at idle if you idle any engine down to low and do an inverted flat spin or any other manuver that torques the prop around your asking for trouble. I found My DA to be worth every cent i spent on it. I am however very curious to find out what the turn around time is on an Evo sent back to horizon so far DA has averaged about week.

I cured the running backwards by moving the prop position one more bolt hole counter clockwise from 1 oclock

Andy,

Where did you get the carbon fiber material for your strut fixture sandwiches? Do you have any pix of the installation?

Thanks,

John

Arts hobby, they had an ad on the forum.
As to the fixtures I sandwiched 1" carbon tape between 2 bits of aircraft ply with epoxy and clamped till dry. Comes out to the same thickness as the original, then cut to the same shape as the original, I glued mine into the wing with thick CA as Tom suggests.
