Default Bulking up the LE...

Tom,

I was working on my 50cc Extra last night (hinging...uugghhh [:'(](shudder)...) and when I pulled my wings from their bags, I noticeed that I must have put just a touch too much presure on the LE of one wing, that I popped the top of a rib in the LE area. If I recall right, it is one bay outboard of the servo...hmmm...right wing. Anyway, I was curious on your thooughts of using something like "Great Stuff" and injecting some in the LE in that area to support the LE sheeting there. I can access the area throough the servo mount, and just a quick squirt will put enough of the expanding foam in to fupport the LE.

I'm not planning on filling the entire LE (tip to root), (why add the weight right?) but I need some support there for longivity. If it were an easily accessable spot, I'd just put the broken piece back in and CyA the thing in strong, but due to it's location, and not wanting to perform full envasive surgery, I figure I can go laparoscopic and fix it from within.

What'da 'ya think?

Jon

P.S. maybe on future runs (I know, modifying the files is a PITA ) the portion of the ribs that is removed could be just a little less, yielding some additional surface area and strength for the LE of the ribs?

It seems like a decent idea, I've never done it but I'm sure there are lots of people on here who would like to know the results.

Okay, well I sprayed it in, made sure it was in the right place, kinda tapped it forward to make sure the LE was filled then I propped it up and let it cure.

Went back a few days later and guess what...the foam expanded then shrunk, sucking the LE sheeting in with it. Not a bunch, but noticably 'thinning' the airfoil at the LE. It kinda looks like Cher's cheeks when she purses her lips.

It will take some surgery now to fix it, but not too bad.

So, I guess the moral of this story is, don't use expading foam to beef up the LE of the wing.

Anyone have an orphaned set of wings?

Jon
