RE: New WH 40% Extra in the works?

Well, there are actually 2 new 40% Extras on the way.

The first is an all composite Extra 260, 121" wingspan. This plane was designed/spec'd by Bill Hempel as a word class competition aircraft. The plugs are finished and molds are being made as this is written. This will be fairly expensive, competitive with the CA 40% planes in price, superior in flying.

The second is a balsa/ply ARF, same dimensions as the 260 above, but will be configured as a Extra 300. This plane is a conventional ARF and will be reasonably priced (compared to the composites at least). It will use all the same dimensions and airfoils so should fly the same.

Composite 260 -- $2400

Built-up Extra 300 -- $1300

These are estimates but will be close.

Tom,
Will the composite 260 have the scale elevators or the counter balances on the stabs? Are you going to do another color scheme contest? If not when can we see the color schemes. :D

Jecarte,
Life is good after the move if your looking at a 40%. Yes, we're watching....

You got to admit a composite Wildhare is like having your cake and eating it too. I'm glad to see you're keep up, good to hear from you, is the D&H ready to go? Send some pics she will be sweet. ;)

The sad part about moving is I haven't flow since I left, my flight sim is down due to a bad interface cord, and the company that repairs them is in South Florida (no electricity due to storm). Hopefully I'm flying tomorrow, joined the new club this weekend, but I hear there are no IMAC flyiers, I guess I'll have to truck a caller down from the Northeast. :)

The composite 260 will have two kinds of stabs available. One set with counterbalances is for 3d/freestyle. The other scale set is for precision flying.

I expect competition flyers to select the set that is needed for the next flight.

I'm nowhere near choosing a scheme, the prototype will be in the Patty Wagstaff blue most likely.

Tom,
On the 40% built-up Extra 300 will you be using a foam core or build up wing?

rctom 10-30-2005 04:28 AM

RE: New WH 40% Extra in the works?

The initial planes will have built-up wings which are lighter. Depending on the total weight, I may choose to go to the stronger foam wings if the built-up wings display any problems, but they have been very good so far.

When I say initial planes, I am getting 5 prototypes for testing. Two will be assembled locally, one is going to Bill Hempel, and I will have two others that need homes. I'm looking for two experienced people who will put the plane together and test fly and provide feedback to me. They are not for review, that can come later, these are prototypes and will almost certainly have things that need to be changed.

Some skill will be required. Anyone who thinks they might like to take this on please call me at 817-490-1210. Must have all the other parts, servos, 150cc engine, appropriate radio gear, etc.

No whining will be allowed, they are untested airplanes, anything can happen.

Tom,
I'd be pleased to test one if possible.
Will call you this morning and get details.

Anyone got a 150cc engine and radio I can borrow!?:D:)

rctom 10-30-2005 02:20 PM

RE: New WH 40% Extra in the works?

See that's the problem. 150cc engine, 14 top quality servos, power box, etc. are a little pricey.

The good news is once you have the stuff the plane itself isn't all that expensive and should last for years, but the expense still narrows the market somewhat.

Tom, It's been a few months since the last post on this thread. Any update on the wooden 40% Extra 300?

Yes. The 5 samples will be in the container with the Yaks and Caps. It's due to leave China about Jan. 10.

Actually the Extras are what has caused the shipment to be delayed a bit.

Here's another bit of info. We are not only making a 41% scale Extra 300, but we are making a smaller one as well, 84" span. This new 84" Extra incorporates many features that people have requested.

It's lighter, it's much more scale (almost exact scale), it has larger control surfaces, lighter wings, more space in the cowl, and should be stiffer in the fuselage. It is also exceptionally good looking.

Based on what I am seeing with the new 84" Extra, I don't think it will take long to get either the 28% or the 41% planes into production.

Tom, thats a beautiful looking plane. I'm thinking of the 260, but that looks a tad nicer, IMHO.

RE: New WH 40% Extra in the works?

Tom, I have a DA 150 and a radio setup (9cap and hitec 5955s). I dont know if your still looking somone to thrash on one of these monsters. I have the Extra 300lx 28% and a Extra 260 33%, I wouldnt mind adding this to the collection if it can hold up to some abuse of 3D. I talk to you alot and patty, and youve seen my vids, its up to you I could have it ready to fly in about a week, I am a paramedic and work nights so I can assemble it in no time. I also have a trailer with a spot still open for a new plane so, Let me know, Thanks, Derek Rousseau.

You mean since a few days ago when I posted that the prototypes would be in the container which was about to leave?

The container is on the way, nothing else will change for at least a month. We're looking at mid-May to get production airplanes.

Believe me there is a lot of interest and we're pushing hard to get them done.
