Default YS 170 CDI on low nitro

Hi all,

Accordingly to the DZ170CDI Operator's manual, this engine could be used with less than 30% nitromethane. The manual states textually:

" Use a good quality alcohol based model engine fuel containing 0% to 25% nitro, and oil content 5% to 25% ............"

Is anyone using this engine on low nitro, say 10-15 % ? . If so, How does it perform regarding reliability and power ? . Of course, I don't expect the engine to have the same power on 15 % nitro, but, does it do the job, I mean P-11 (P-13) F3A schedule ?

Thanks in advance for your inputs !

Enrique

Enrique,

I flew mine on 15% Cool Power last year before I switched to electric. The motor performed great and had good power. Obviously not what it does on 30%, but it wasn't bad. There was about a 400 RPM difference between 15 and 30. I was running the 19X11 on the 30%, but liked the 18.1X11 on 15% as it let the motor spin a similar RPM around 7500 which it was very happy at. If your plane is fairly light, I doubt you would notice a significant difference. If you are close to 11# and running on a hot humid day, you might want a little bit more.

Hello Arch, thanks for your complete and helpful comment. By the way, how do you like electrics ?. Do you feel confortable with it or are you missing the glow ? Do you think you will stay with electric pattern ? I have not been able to decide what to do about that, a lot of information for and against the electrics confuses me.

Regards
