Default YS .61 AR

Hi Dave,

I recently purchased what I thought was a regular .61-R. It turns out that is is actually the AR version with the oiling orifice for the rear bearing just below the carb, machined head and the sealing rings around the crankshaft. If memory serves, wasn't the AR a supercharged style engine with the sealed portion of the crankcase acting like an air chamber providing boost? Is the AR a ringed piston engine (piston looks ringed to me [8D] )? What RPM and Prop sizes would you suggest (came with no paperwork)?

I noticed that several ppl ask you about after run oil so I will be no different , I currently use Valvoline synthetic penetrating lubricant is that ok? Thank you very much for your time.

Aaron

The AR engines were not in any way supercharged. The real differences between that engine and the standard 61 were the use of crankshaft sealing rings which was supposed to help keep the rear bearing from rusting. It really didn't work.
It's difficult to recommend prop sizes due to the variables of the pipe setup, fuel, etc. Start with a 12x8 and work from there. Ideally the engine should run in the area of 10,500 rpm for best results.

Good Luck.

Hmmmm, From what I remember from the time period when the engine was released and the forums here and other places the AR was supposed to produce more power then the regular .61 and able to turn larger props. Is this not true?

Maybe a tad more power, but nonetheless, a problematic engine, as was the regular 61 LS.
Not many were sold, and the engine was quickly discontinued as the rules changes in pattern made everyone go to big four strokes.

Problematic [:'(] I don't like the sound of that. Nothing worse then seeing a guy spending a lot of time tinkering on an engine thats not running right instead of flying. I do have a large mixed collection of YS .60 FS/FR engines with 3 of them NIB. Perhaps I will just stick with using those and see if anyone else would like to buy the two ARs I have. One them is also NIB. Dave, I thank you for all your time and information.

I have a few of the old 60's myself. They were marvelous engines. Wish I could get YS to make another run of them, but I won't hold my breath ;&gt)

Good Flying!

That would be something if you could get those execs at YS to do that...Now wasn't the .45 discontinued and brought back? So... why not the .60? it makes sense to me.. In any event, I just bought a 1.10FZ and was wondering what Prop you would suggest. I am looking for all out speed as it is going in a World Models Midget Mustang Racer. I am not one to have a bunch of diff fuels so I plan to run 15% Powermaster (18% 50/50 Oil blend) with the stock muffler (don't want to ruin the lines of the plane with a huge pipe). Any info would be appreciated.

Aaron

PS. I know you said the ARs were not in anyway supercharged but I still can't shake the memory of me reading the ads stating that it was and how I was looking forward to their release. So as a result, I am going to be searching through the 1000s of mags I have stored in the garage to see if I am crazy.

The 45 was never discontinued.
Try a 14x12 or 13x14 if you can find one. The engine may not be the happiest on 15%. 30% heli fuel works well in this application.
Hope you find the ad. I'm glad I didn't write it if it says the engine was "supercharged". That would be a real stretch.

The .45 was never discontinued? Figures. The problem I face is I live in San Diego, CA and for some reason, we are missing a real RC Store here. We have 2 Hobbypeople stores and a couple of very small but overpriced stores but let me tell you they are the worst. They don't sell YS anything and rarely have anything I need. I am forced to mail order most of my stuff which can be frustrating when you want things today. I can't even buy a Futaba Radio or accessories at Hobbypeople, they don't carry them. All they do is push their Magnum line of poor engines on unsuspecting new hobbyists. I have actually been asked to leave from their El Cajon store when I rescued a new RCer (we are still flying together) from a huge mistake. Maybe my calling is to open up San Diego's first RC Superstore for all your rc hobby needs.

Anyway, thanks for all your time. I will look for those props online and will think about going to the 30% Heli-mix. Regards

Aaron
