Default YS 53 Self-Help

I've a nicely broken in 53 that's given great service and, until recently, has always run great However lately it will not consisently hold a needle setting and any range of adjustment is considerably more narrow than it has been when it was "happy." Is this indicative of a regulator needing service or adjustment? That said, is this something I can tackle or should the engine be sent in for inspection and repair? Thanks for any suggestions or encouragement.

It's hard to say what the problem could be. How is the hot compression? If it leaks enough compression while it is at operating temperature, it will effect the adjustments.
Have the valve adjustments been checked?

At a minimum I would replace the diaphragm, and see if it helps.

Let me know.

Yup, I recently set the valves - in fact, I usually check them twice a year. Hot compression feels OK. Is the diaphram replacement and re-adjustment something I could attempt without messing it up? Or should I send the engine to you for ... ?

Thanks.

It's easy to do. Just pop the regulator housing off and put in a new one. Just be sure to mark the housing as it will go on either way.

Cool - thanks, Dave! I'll order one up and give it a try.
